I was recently reading one of Pete Roses books and he had a segment on coaching and his attitude towards how to deal with players was very encouraging. Never embarrass a player . Build their confidence. Put them in situations where they can succeed . I had coaches we said things to me I couldn’t imagine saying to a child but I learned from those bad experiences also and I would like to help kids one day .

Amazing that there’s even debate about this. This industry is ruining a good and beautiful thing. . . Youth team sports.

The parents are the only ones that can fix it. The schools have no power over youth sports programs, so that's not an option unfortunately. The people running the leagues, tournaments and coaches who are financially incentivized to play year round, will not solve it. It can only come when the parents say "enough!".

It's difficult. My kid always wanted (wants, he's a middle school-er) to play baseball all the time. We were lucky that our little league had a what I'd call a "community team" it was an age group team from the little league coached by dads, and at cost fees/number of players.. No pay for coaches, but we did have winter indoor practice). We played tournaments against the travel teams. Different cohorts had varying success, we won a few, lost a few more but almost all those kids are still playing after they aged out of little league. We focused on the fundamentals. Practice, and loving the game. It was a pretty perfect middle ground between rec ball and the big money travel teams. Once my son turned 13 we had a long talk and he moved to a travel team and has had a great experience (so far). I think these families paying 10k a year for a 10 year old to play ball is bonkers, but if that community team hadn't existed I don't know what we would have done. My boy played soccer, basketball, and did jiu jitsu but all he really wanted to do was play baseball.

Good stuff. I think to fully understand the financial dynamics, the "entertainment" and "socializing" aspects of travel sports need to be examined. You could argue parents are spending money for their own entertainment and social lives as much as any hopes of future playing career for their children. I think this has to be looked at for parents to stop feeding the bear. Many parents build their lives around kids' events.

Maybe I’m one of the few parents in travel ball that think like this but… my sons in travel, yes because it is a bit higher level of competition. But mainly because I wanted him to learn the game, the coaching at LL level was awful. And I say that as a former team manager, I didn’t know what I was doing and neither did most coaches I knew. (For the record, I’m not bagging on any volunteers. Anyone who takes the responsibility and steps up to help any player should be comended) But also because I work with my son almost daily but in between seasons it’s hard to get excited to practice sometimes. With almost year round play in travel, he continues to want to work. I don’t have any expectations of my son going pro, or even getting to college with it. I just love that he loves the game and that enough. Good game or bad game he’s all smiles and that’s the best thing to see as a parent.

Colleges aren't giving out commitment letters to 10 year olds. No need for them to be at those tournaments. Stay home and work on improving your skills.

This problem seems like the perfect storm: capitalism/free market (a good thing) + increasing adult-centric culture and greed (bad) + fear of missing out and being fed misinformation. Thanks for addressing this. What are the concrete actions we need to take?

Mr. Beede; I would guess you would not recall but I met with you (approximately) five years ago close to Boston. I said that we were
working to the same end and perhaps we could do something together. You evidenced interest but there was no followup. I am still voicing the same issues but I do not find an audience for this. The travel ball industry is simply too well financed and LOUD!!! Most importantly their message ... is EXACTLY WHAT THE PARENTS WANT TO HEAR!!! I am in partnership with the Red Sox scout for consulting and evaluations. In addition to my baseball experience I am educated up the ___; multiple ceertifications in strength and conditioning, psychology, etc. Moreoever we have worked with and placed over 100 players in college and pro ball; including all Americans, etc. I am at a point where I think I NEED to quit. Nobody cares for the truth

As an adult, I can play in my beer league for $120 a season, but these travel ball teams want 15 grand???? For what? My beer league team would also beat these travel ball teams easily😂😂😂😂 that’s supposed to be a joke but I’m just saying. It’s not like traveling to these random ass tournaments is providing a higher level of competition than a group of your local players would

Travel ball is just a big monet grab. Its killing little league. Every year i see less and less kids signing up at the little league lever, its sad.

I agree. My friend recently told me he was buying his 12 year old daughter a 400 dollar bat. I was blown away with how ridiculous that sounds. When i was a kid my parents would have never spent that kind of money on a piece of equipment for youth sports. It has all gotten out of control.
