Directed by Andy Muschietti (It, Mama) the film stars Ezra Miller (Fantastic Beasts) as Barry Allen, Michael Keaton (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as OG Batman, Ben Affleck (The Justice League, Argo) as Batfleck/ Bruce Wayne, Sasha Calle as Supergirl and Michael Shannon (Bullet Train, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) as General Zod. The Snyderverse, not as a cinematic universe, but as a place to live in, seems so dark and inhospitable, that it's hard to argue why you shouldn't meddle with the timeline and try to change things up. For the story to work, the alternate universe has to be even worse, and not having Superman there to fight Zod seems like a decent incentive.
