I recently watched a interview with the writer and director Alex Garland on the Lex Fridman podcast and something he pointed out that I found really interesting was that at then end of the movie when Ava was walking around the house freely and without an observer she smiled. He said that he felt the best indication you can have about the interior state of someone is if they are not being observed and they smile about something. He said for him, that was evidence of Ava's true sentience and passing the test and that she wasn't a evil robot who with no empathy but a conscious being who was imprisoned and made a bunch of value judgments about how to get out. Highly recommend watching the podcast episode, they both have very interesting perspectives.

Skipping over Caleb's imprisonment was cruel, but so was the actual scene. That's what stuck with me all these years. He just died in that corridor being stuck for weeks without food and water.

The other robots were empty husks, with erased minds. Just like Ava would have become.

you left out the best bits: the attack, the dancing. the torture.

Alicia Vikander is so amazing in this movie

I feel like these types of movie work better when watched alone. That's always been my problem with group reactions, some moments just hit better when you watch it alone. You're less likely to be vulnerable when you watch something with other people than when you are alone or with your significant other.

Huh, it feels like some extremely major moments were missing from the YouTube highlights version of this (the iconic dance scene and *SPOILERS* the main twist of the movie where Ava abandons Caleb especially). I guess maybe you guys didn't have much of a reaction to those? I'll definitely have to watch the full length later.

This movie is underrated as hell. Easily my favorite of 2014. I’m glad the guys are finally getting around to watching it.

*Me not paying attention for a while and then returning*

Eric: "It doesn't have mouth-pleasure. I like mouth-pleasure"

*record scratches and music stops*

me: "The What?"

Got introduced to this movie when talking to a friend and he just mentioned watching and loving it in a passing comment and cause we have rather similar tastes I watched it before the next time I saw him. We talked for about 2hours about just this movie and how much we loved it and why. So glad to see you guys reacting to this ^^

So happy this finally won a poll, I sent them the bluray back in mailbag 161 hoping they would react to it one day. The acting is stellar, the visuals and music create a brooding and tense atmosphere. Alex Garland quickly became one of my favourite writer/directors, along with Denis Villeneuve who are both making some amazing sci fi films.

The way Eva plays Caleb like a fiddle is great, and super obvious on seconds viewings.
I especially loved the questions scene. She asks him simple but nebulous questions and asserts with confidence that he lies. Can she really tell whether he is lying or not?
Maybe, maybe not, it doesn't matter. She wants him to think that she can. This makes Caleb reflect more before answering, and then she hits him with the hard questions.

No dance scene reaction!? Lol, I’m really surprised. I think she might have felt empathy for the dude she left, but she cared about herself more. If she let him out, then her risk of discovery/getting recaptured and/or destroyed go up by quite a bit. Far safer to just leave him to die, and if she’s doing that then trying to explain it to him would be pointless.

On Eric's point this movie actually won the Oscar for visual effects on a shoestring budget.

Please let this be a sign that they will see Annihilation next.

This movie feels like a great Black Mirror episode, especially because of Domhnall Gleeson being there too.

Oh they actually mention that (:

I didn't expect this, but I love Ex Machina.
Such a great movie, and I'm a fan of Alex Garland.

Given the philosophical discussions the crew has on many other shows and films, this is a perfect film for a blind wave reaction
