Hindu law is divine, strong, absolute.
2 types of sources, 1.Ancient or traditional source. it has 4 parts
1. sruti (vedas)
very primary and important source of knowledge. this is also called as voice of god. what was heard by sages from god directly.
there are 4 vedas.
Rig veda
yajur veda
sama veda
Atharvana veda.
2. smriti
what was remembered by sages from the words of god.
Achara vyavahara and prayaschitta.
Manu, Narada and yagnavalkya are important Smritikars.
earlier termed as Dharma Sutras (800-200 B.C)
later termed as Dharma sashtras.
Manusmriti is the oldest and greatest and also know as Reservoir. It has 12 chapters and 2694 Slokas.
law deals with the subject under 18 titles.
11. master and servants 12. husband and wife 13. partition and inheritance 14. betting and gambling 15. Assault 16. Defamation 17. theft and robbery 18. adultery.
3.Digests and commentaries.
Manutika, Manubhashya written by medhatithi, Mitakshara written by vigneswara and Dayabhaga written Jimutavahana are the famous commentaries. Manavata muktavali written by kulluka Bhatta.
Aparaditya written by Aparaka.
viramitrodaya written by mitramisra.
vivadachintamani written by vachaspathi.
