The 1979 Boba Fett Action Figure: The Bounty Hunter That Captured Fans' Hearts
When Kenner released the Boba Fett action figure in 1979, it didn’t just introduce fans to a cool-looking bounty hunter—it ignited a frenzy that made this figure a legendary piece of Star Wars history.
Initially offered as a mail-away exclusive, collectors had to clip proof-of-purchase seals from other Star Wars toys and mail them in to claim this mysterious new character. While fans were eager to see him in action, most wouldn’t meet Boba Fett on-screen until The Empire Strikes Back premiered in 1980.
But there’s a twist: Kenner advertised the figure with a “rocket-firing” backpack. However, due to safety concerns, the feature was scrapped before production. The released version had a non-firing missile glued in place, but prototypes with the firing mechanism exist, and they’re among the rarest and most valuable Star Wars collectibles today.
Boba Fett's sleek armor, T-visor helmet, and menacing mystery made him an instant fan favorite—and owning this figure was like holding a piece of the galaxy far, far away. Even now, nearly 45 years later, the 1979 Boba Fett remains one of the most sought-after figures in the Star Wars collecting world.
