Considering your lack of experience and essential tools you did okay. However, I'm much older than you and have been doing DIY for decades, so take my word for it invest in some tools. Home Depot has a Stanley hand tool kit for just under $50 with all the tools you should ever need. There's cheaper kits, that even come in pink, but don't be tempted by those - better tools will last long longer and get the job done. You can also buy a half-decent hand drill for around $50. Believe me, you will never regret this $100 investment, it will serve you well.
