Thank you, adjusting file caching fixed the problem for me in VLC 3.0.4, the subtitles are still a little weird but better than black subtitles in current VLC. Anyone reading this, I've had great luck with PotPlayer. I've only ever used VLC so switching feels weird but it's worth it to me until a fix is found for the subtitles.

I've always been able to play any videos up to 1440p HD on my laptop without any problems, but get a bit of stuttering when playing 2160p HD music videos - not much (but enough to be annoying).

I carefully followed all the instructions and, honestly, it made little or no difference afterwards.

I have a very well-maintained (but 5 year old) laptop with only 4GB RAM and a 512GB HDD. 2160p HD videos play without any problems, but perhaps the age of my device and generation of processor stops 4K videos being played seemlessly.
