I have been playing for 26 years (since I was 6 years old). I believed that if I didn't become top of my class by then end of high school, than I would never improve. Thankfully, I continued taking lessons and playing recreationally through college. I improved so much. So glad I kept playing. I have been playing for weddings and expanded to looping as well. Now I have three students. Just keep playing!

Just beginning to read music and play violin at seventy-one. That is I'm still a beginner after a year and a half, improving slowly but surely, with lessons twice a month and half hour practice most days. Sometimes more because I like the challenge and the miracle of "getting it." I started out thinking it would be good for brain health and have fallen in love. Your videos are definitely fun and helpful, Julia! Thank you!

I am 48 and only learning the violin now and I'm getting good progress

I'm in my upper 30's started 6 weeks ago and my teacher says I'm progressing quickly. Having a music background (saxophone) has helped. Hoping to play in the community orchestra next year.

Madam you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!! i started learning violin at the age of 14 and left it after two years. Now I started again at 50+ age and getting startled to see that I am picking up 8/10 times faster than my previous spell. Of course over the years my attitude towards the violin has gone a radical change. Now I am obsessed with violin and apply my mind in learning what I never did during my teenage days. Thank you a lot.

So you pick out the hardest parts first. That's one way great advice thank you

Hi Julia.
Another thing I have noticed about practicing for too long of a session it can make it harder to play the next day. I get fatigued and find it harder to keep bow high enough to reach G ...and end up hitting string below the D or A that I am trying to play.

Excellent advice. You are so right about being tired when you practice correctly. The most difficult part is finding the time. Thank you so much for your continued encouragement. It helps tremendously.

Thank you, Julia! I have been taking lessons for about 16 months, starting at age 66! I feel like I’m hitting a plateau and not advancing, especially with staccato pieces. I’m still in first position and have difficulty crossing strings and hitting the right notes consistently.

I'm 20, I haven't played since I was 10 but my nana is giving me her old violin. This gave me the inspiration i needed to pick it up again I've wanted to for ages but always felt I left it too late to pick it up again

I can relate to all three myths! I started to learn how to play when my children were learning, but their violin teacher told me to stop because my ability to learn faster than they would intimidate them. Being the good mother, I heeded his advice. In retrospect, I shouldn't have. Fast forward, I picked up the violin ten months ago (I will soon be eighty) and I am so delighted with my progress. I have time to practice, money to buy the best bows and violins, and my own grown sons for instructors. Although, I regret the lost years of not continuing when I first started forty-three years ago, I can firmly vouch that learning the violin at any age is doable! Besides my adult sons who are excellent violinists never hesitate to offer me instruction and tips for improving my playing.

Hi Julia, thanks for the inspiration.  I practice (actually learn violin) at least 3 times a week; however, I only get about 1/2 hour sessions because my string hand starts going numb and develops minor cramps (senior citizen related problems, I'm 65 years old).  This numbness problem isn't related to the violin as I have played guitar since I was 12 years old and 30 minutes is all I can play it these days as well.  Oddly, I can play on my piano for hours and have not noticed numbness.  Bottom Line:  Age probably doesn't mater much in the learning department but it has a major impact on a persons ability!  I thank you deeply for your videos; you truly are an inspiration!

honestly these are all true in my case, or rather have been but at a moment i just stopped making excuses and started picking up that violin and tried to get melodies out of it, tried my best to find the exact notes and keep harmony and it didnt always sound good but after abit of practice its already better, also thanks to your videos and especially this one that has just confirmed my thoughts, ive always thought that 17 was a tad bit too old to learn so, thanks alot julia !!!

As for Myth:3 a two-hour "practice" for me, regardless of the instrument I'm playing, seems like only 20 minutes. I do, however, have thousands of pieces of sheet music from which to choose. I only quit my session because I have other commitments. After all, there's only 24 hours to a day. 😉 ♫ 🎻

I am going to try learning the tough parts of a piece first. Children do have much better memories than older adults so kids can remember pieces so much easier. My memory is awful now so I must play note by note with sheet music.

Hello Julia. As an adult learner, I am glad to see that I can learn just as easily as a child as long as I am practicing. I decided to begin learning at 37 years old and I have been learning for approximately 6 months so far. I typically practice for about one hours a day on most days, but a bit less on others.  I believe I am progressing ok, but I still cannot produce vibrato. I practice many techniques on the topic. But still I have many problems with it.  Should I rather just focus on building other skills first? At 6 months of learning, should I be focusing on things like vibrato yet?
