65. DIY Vinyl Cabin Headliner | Learning the Lines - DIY Sailing

In this vlog we finally get the new headliner in the salon area of our sailboat. We used a tongue and groove style vinyl beadboard found at Home Depot. It's completely waterproof and should never rot. The trim is also vinyl. We also added 1/2" XPS foam insulation, (also found at Home Depot) to help cut down on the heat of the tropical sun's rays.

We're finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We go in the water December 3rd.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

I have been agonizing over what to put on my cabin and ceilings and this is it. Thanks.

Regular velcro adhesive will release after some hours in the 90's. The commercial stuff that 3M makes for windshield toll passes is special, it can take the heat. Don't be surprised, maybe what you have will stay up.

I just wanted to Thank you guys for doing a great job of representing Tampa, FL. I have been watching your videos for a while now and watched the comments video you did. Keyboard warriors are always the brave in front of a monitor. Truth be known, the majority cant even come close to watch you two are doing. Keep it up!!

Looks good. I would have run a few wires since I had the ceiling out for some LED lights.

Man, she's got to be SO much brighter down below now! The white headliner has to make it feel like a brand new boat! With all the stuff you're doing to her, she's going to be a brand new boat in no time! Keep up the good work!

The insulation is pink. The color shade will change depending on the light source. Artificial light can confuse colors to our eyes. Basicly the light bulb can change your colors. So you are both right! That vinyl beadboard is a handy solution for your overhead. You might want to consider hand rails mounted to the overhead to assist movement in rough seas. You two are doing great! See you in the next one.

This is the second interior restoration video ive seen using this PVC paneling, you guys are helping to boost their sales, because im now planning to use this stuff instead of FRP panels to redo the headliner in my boat as well! haha

That headliner looks great. I’m trying to create something similar but with wood panels. This looks much easier I have to say.

Those foam panels in the ceiling are a great idea ! They will help keep the heat out, the cool in an reduce noise ! If the cabin top does not flex much (after your other reinforcements) then gluing them is really not necessary. If the screw head are not big enough to hold the foam up there, make oversized "washers" out of thing plastic (cut down milk bottle caps or even large pieces of plastic like from a coffee can).

That trim piece really was the "icing on the cake". Your ceiling looks AWESOME !

Gaps really don’t matter because they are covered up .

Looks really good guys. I think with the counters and trim around the port lights and hatches you have just the right amount of contrast. The white will make a great surface for multi-color led lighting. Caught a good glimpse of the sink, backsplash and sink faucet and it's looking nice too. Keep at it you're almost there. Have a good week.

The headliner looks fantastic. I love that you are using readily available cheap design alternatives for the interior space - so smart. Thank you for another excellent video :)

You are doing such a great job which looks amazing so do you self down, you aren’t professional but you take pride in what you do. BIG. Thumbs up from me. We have some of the best boat builders in the world down here in NewZealand, yes we have the America’s Cup we pinched from you guys, sorry about that, you should be justly proud of your efforts. As you can see I’m playing catch up on your videos!
