In a rough sense, gnomes are almost like elves with severely stunted growth

Gnomes live in boroughs within forested areas, but they can live deep underground too. Specially since many have an affinity for gems and metals.

And yes, while they are more likely to be magic users, be even more careful for magic traps and contraptions. Gnomes have more Artificers than any other DnD race!!! AND THEY REALLY LOVE WHEN THINGS EXPLODE

I think a good way to remember the difference between the 3 would be that they're travel-size versions of the 3 taller human-like races;

Dwarves: snack-sized Goliaths
Gnomes: bite-sized Elves
Halflings(/Hobbits): half-pint Humans
