Soft Cell - Tainted Love (1982)

Показать описание
We could probably break the decade of the 80's up into two parts: 1) a brief intro period that resembled the late 70's as well as features of the dawning 80's in 1980 and 1981
and 2) the rest of the decade, from 1982 through 1989. That ultimately became apparent with the first major nationwide breakout of MTV in August 1982, although it had first been
aired in some regions beginning August 1, 1981. It would not finally take hold in all parts of the country until late 1983.
However, a number of songs were already changing the music scene in 1982 America before MTV blitzed the country with a second British Invasion. Some of these already had done well in the UK in 1981, a year earlier, but took a while to catch on in the US and Canada. Thus was the case with this monster hit by Soft Cell, "Tainted Love," a cover of a Northern soul song first recorded in 1964 by Gloria Jones that failed to chart. This was among a number of hits that I felt set 1982 apart from '80 and '81 and essentially began the 80's in earnest. This was the same year Time magazine's "Man of the Year" was a personal computer, making 1982 as significant as 1750 as we bid goodbye to the Industrial Age and hello to the Computer (Digital) Age.
I have all three versions of "Tainted Love" on vinyl: the 45 single, the album it appeared on, and an extended play single that segues the song with the The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go?" The extended play was the version I preferred to play at the nightclub where I worked. Frequently requested and well-received by the barroom audience, the song gave a more mature sound to new wave, beautifully textured in shades of light and dark. I never tired of hearing it, then or now. Number 1 in the UK in December 1981, "Tainted Love" reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 17, 1982 and #7 for two weeks on the Cash Box Top 100 on July 24 and July 31.
As with some other really great songs, I have chosen this one also to shine the spotlight on the lovely dancer, model, and artist Raphaella McNamara.
