UVB-76. Another shortwave mystery from Russia is known as the Buzzer. Heard on 4625 kHz, 1905-1907 UTC. UVB-76, broadcast on 4625 kHz and intermittently on 4810 kHz. It emits a short, monotonous buzz, which is repeated 24 hours a day at a rate of about 25 tones per minute. Occasionally, the signal is interrupted by a Russian announcement. This mysterious broadcast began during the 1970s, and despite many theories as to its origin or purpose, none have been confirmed. The buzzing sound has also been speculated to be a "channel marker" to make it unappealing to other potential users. Two additional Russian broadcasts, that follow a similar format, are "Pip” and “The Squeaky Wheel.” Each one makes its own distinctive sound that is constantly repeated, and occasionally interrupted to relay what is believed to be coded voice messages. 02 Sept 2021
