Why I bought the Lucid Air

The global chip shortage isn't impacting just iPhones and PlayStations sales, the car market was hit just as hard, and if you've tried to buy a car within the past twelve months, you've probably experienced some form of dealer markup. Here's my story of what it was like trying to purchase a Mercedes-Benz EQS and how I ultimately ended up with a Lucid Air instead.

I just read those texts and I can’t believe the salesperson said that the “market adjustment drives the value, ” Unbelievable. Jon, and everyone else should not give in into paying more than msrp. There’s a reason why people call them stealerships.

Thanks for sharing Jon! As a matter of principle, I would not pay $1 over MSRP, let alone $50K. This whole thing has become ridiculous, and I hope these dealers go out of business. Like you, I understand that they are struggling and need to make money. However, they should be ashamed to be asking for these huge "market adjustments"!

What happened to you could not happen over here in Germany. If you make a contract to buy a car at a official Mercedes dealer, than you'll pay exactly the price you made a contract. What could happen due to supply chain issues is a delay. Everything else would be fraud.

I appreciate you sharing the full story here. I was in the market for a new car during 2021 but I recently gave up. I'm unwilling to pay $10K+ over MSRP for a new car much less a pre-owned. In the meantime I'm going to keep saving in hopes of finding something with a reasonable "market adjustment". I will probably have to look in another state because California is bonkers.

Great job and it is no longer about protecting consumers or even creating brand loyalty at this point. It's about short-term gains, quick profits, and dollars in the pockets. I have two cars on reserve right now and I'm willing to walk away if the markup is egregious. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I work at various dealerships in LA / Orange County photographing cars and I've seen mark ups as much as $125, 000 for some Porsche models. It's a bizarre time in the dealership world. Congrats on your Lucid Air!

As a car saleswoman working in Baltimore right next door to the Mercedes dealership there is a $100k markup on these.

Here in Manitoba canada I’ve never seen a market adjustment locally just recently ordered a raptor and it is at msrp and none of my Mercedes’ have ever had this and Black series AMG gt and g wagens are selling for sticker at the dealers.

I'm glad you didn't allow them to stick it to you. I recall when the Chrysler 300 came out. A dealer in Chicago I went to attempted the same thing. I passed on it. It's said you shouldn't pay over MSRP, let alone a markup. I hope you find much gratification in your Lucid. It definitely looks and performs better.
