Sounds like they definitely made the mistake of killing a human family, but being unable to kill the father in time. As for the animal . . . well, that depends on how big these aliens are. The first thing that comes to mind is an elephant, given how thoroughly and effortlessly flattened they were, but it could be a cow for all I know.

Point is that they absolutely shouldn't go and obtain an unspecified quantity if the military hasn't even shown up yet.

It is difficult to fight with honor if you don't know the honor code. I am curious how an intelligent race failed to comprehend the situation on the ground was completely different than the one they were told to attack and therefore hesitate in order to let command know that things were different.

"...of violence", I believe is an acceptable literal addition to clarify the idiomatic intention of the translated phrase. It is a war challenge and general threat offered in response to an instigator, implying that the speaker is asking you to make good on your promise for battle and intends to respond in kind. A similar phrase used more often as a warning to potential challengers is "[fornicate] in the general area, [investigate]", or more accurately to the meaning, "act foolishly, and suffer the consequences of folly". There is an implication that the recipient does not realize the magnitude of the situation they are attempting to insert themselves in and are unprepared, hence the warning.

Oh those poor xenos. When the humans have a history of shooting from behind trees and rocks, and a history of going berserk or engaging in bloodlust, as well as some forces deciding to attack the enemy on Christmas Day (on 2 different occasions), then you are dealing with a whole world of crazy. Want a fun read? The Last Ride of the Tin Can Sailors - where a unit of 3 destroyers and 4 destroyer escorts attacked a Japanese fleet that had a battleship, a couple of heavy cruisers, and other lighter ships. Spoiler alert - the Japanese fleet broke and ran. That's right, the Americans decided "F it. We're going to wheel about and charge the enemy."
