I always liked Ince and felt more optimistic when he was in the England side. He could do everything. The main blight of his career was ducking a penalty against Germany in Euro ‘96; his obvious terror during the spot kicks surprised me given his shirtless antics before matches, but he wasn’t the only one to bottle it! Even if Southgate missed, you’ve got to respect him for volunteering. It could’ve got embarrassing for England and Venables if they couldn’t produce a player willing to take a sudden death penalty…
