Fetal Development and Growth

Fetal development is the stage of prenatal development that begins at the end of the embryonic period, around eight weeks after fertilization, and continues until birth. During this time, the fetus's organs, including the brain and spinal cord, continue to develop. Here are some highlights of fetal development: 

Weeks 11–14

The fetus's eyelids close, face is well-formed, and limbs are long and thin. 

Weeks 15–18

The fetus's skin becomes almost transparent, and fine hair called lanugo develops on its head. The fetus also begins to move and stretch. 

Weeks 19–21

The fetus can hear, and the mother may feel the fetus's first movements, called quickening. 

Weeks 22

The fetus's entire body is covered in lanugo hair, and it makes its first bowel movement, called meconium. Eyebrows and lashes also appear. 

Weeks 23

Fingerprints and footprints form, and the fetus begins to have rapid eye movements. 

Weeks 25

The fetus might be able to respond to familiar sounds, such as your voice, with movement. 

Weeks 26

The fetus's lungs develop. 

30–32 weeks

The fetus has increased central nervous system control over body functions and rhythmic breathing movements.
