Matthew Broome: Teaching Philosophy and Ethics in an Interdisciplinary Mental Health MSc course

In this talk I will offer a brief overview of my experience of teaching philosophy and psychiatry over the last 20+ years before detailing our MSc Mental Health, and our module Philosophy and Ethics of Mental Health and Wellbeing. I’ll end with some reflections on the importance of philosophy for clinicians.
Matthew Broome is Chair in Psychiatry and Youth Mental Health, and Director of the Institute for Mental Health, at the University of Birmingham, and Distinguished Research Fellow, Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford. Matthew studied Pharmacology and Medicine at the University of Birmingham and trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, Bethlem Royal Hospital, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Matthew has a PhD in Psychiatry from the Institute of Psychiatry and in Philosophy from the University of Warwick. He is series editor to the OUP series, International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry and deputy editor of The British Journal of Psychiatry.
