Honestly, I think that you are now making a new jee advanced out of competitive programming and gsoc. Emphasis has shifted from "Coding for self-empowerment" to "Coding for surving the rat race". I am not asking anyone to quit programming, but the IT industry in India needs to be driven by passion and big vision to dominate, else it will be the new battleground after UPSC.

more than the half of the internships grabs are for the once who are in tier 1 colleges that eliminates almost 90% percent students.

Placements can never become a rat race like JEE (as some people say)
1) Branch restrictions. We all know maximum companies allow only CSE/IT/ECE/EEE students for placements. Mechanical, Chemical etc. Branches have lower success rate.
2) Companies which visit your campus conduct competition b/w your batch mates. (50% is reserved category students, I will not say anything offending)
3) It's also dangerous for you if company allows all the branches to sit for placement. For eg. If a college have 1000 students, company will conduct a coding test, then shortlist according to CGPA, then in interview they will obviously prefer a CSE/ECE student over others.
4) Off-campus placements are a myth. They hold a tougher competition for joining and even some companies demand experience of atleast 3 years and all skills such as web development, app development etc.
5) Referrals can only be given by your college seniors (seriously).
No unknown will ever refer you.
