BETTY CARTER (Bebop Betty) Jazz History # 44

Показать описание
Betty Carter evidently did not like the nickname ‘Bebop Betty’, but it was apt in describing her as a singer who truly used her voice as an improvising instrument. She was a trailblazer, not only as a woman in jazz and an improvising vocalist, but as one who took control of her career to the point of starting and recording exclusively for her own record label at a time when such a thing was an audacious move for any musician. Her unmistakable voice and style was like no other, clearly demonstrated in this video, and her legacy as a mentor lives on.

ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s. 4 HR BREAKLESS SET @ Fasching, Stockholm 6-5-85 w Green, Harper, Shaw 4 a very small midweek audience. I was there, was 22. What an initiation ! A boiling cauldron of tranquil explosiveness as shown in the closing segment. "You are a jazz wizard" - "Thank U". "Your art enriches the human spirit" - "A nod". "You are a gift to the Creation" . " (went speechless). (Signed 4 of her Roulettes to my name). It was 4am when it ended, bout 5 listeners left, despite she gave us all - sparing none, least herself & the backup .. .. ..I knew I had just witnessed sth ...Out of this world

Hi Chase - I’ve had to take a prolonged break from watching these but didn’t want you to think I’m no longer interested in, or appreciative of, them. Among other priorities, (personal health and US elections volunteering), I’m working with a couple of HS trumpet players and will be working through “Jazz Tactics” with one, and leaning heavily on these excellent videos to supplement those lessons.

Hope all is well with you and keep up the amazing work! These are reference-quality educational vids!
