Montreal storm: Powerful rain leaves hundreds of homes flooded

A month's worth of rain fell in the span of two hours on Thursday, according to the City of Montreal. The heavy rain overwhelmed much of the city's sewer system, leaving hundreds of homes and streets flooded.

As Global's Brayden Jagger Haines reports, major improvements to the infrastructure are coming but are they enough to keep up with the rapidly-changing climate?

I'm a plumber and served Montreal for over a decade. Unfortunately, because they raised density above what was engineered, and also because the sewer system is extremely old and outdated in some areas, there is no easy fix. I wouldn't live in the lower areas, or buildings that are last on their sewer systems. Simply put, if your home has what's called a combined sewer system, expect sewer backup.

We could all learn a lesson from the excellent water management in The Netherlands

People have short memories.
In the summer of 1978 or thereabouts there was a rain storm so fierce that it turned the Decarie Expressway into a canal. I distinctly remember a TV news clip showing a tanker truck bobbing about in that trench.

If I lived in such a vulnerable area, I would construct my own easy shut off system to cut off all my connections to the sewer system.

I guess we should ask why there isn't proper drainage...
What extreme weather? Rain is considered extreme now? lol

I wonder if weather can be controlled…

Ever more frequent extreme weather? Please provide a scientific citation for that statement with a statistically significant analysis. Shouldn't be too hard eh?

Wild wind, torrential rains, floods, extreme prolonged heat domes, and droughts leaving lands, forests, and reservoirs bone dry, and we think global food production and prices won't be affected? Today's prices are tomorrow's sale prices, if it's even available. A $45 bag of white rice, $23 - 16 months ago, will feed one adult for six months. Worth considering as climate insurance but don't store it in your basement. It ain't the end of the world but this should make a dam good preview. Can't stand rice? You need not eat cooked rice, just follow every mouthful with water to swallow it. It's so small you'll pass it easily. [For those with little money to prepare.]

There is a special check vale that can prevent a back up flood like this.

Classic deflection from the City “No city in the world..” Excuses. This city is not prepared for the future and have squandered taxpayer money vs. getting ready for these contingencies.

What about Japan's flood control tunnels they seem to be able to deal with heavy amounts of water guy said no city around the world can deal with this?

I'm not an expert but can't some engineer develop some sort of rain catching device to prevent flooding? It's 2023 and we have super computers and AI, yet no one can figure out how to catch and divert torrential rain falls and use it for something useful instead of disasters happening. We all just look at the rain when it falls and the aftermath and say "golly gee wilikers that just happened AGAIN" *Ba Dum Tss!
