I think the one thing many people fail to appreciate in the product development process is the time it takes to develop tooling and pass regulatory testing. Where I work, getting something created and working often is only half the schedule. The testing is six months minimum and transfer to production three months minimum. So the more experienced among us start that planning and progress well before the thing is actually finished being developed.

I made sure to provide a reference location to satisfy that very need!

Yes, I don't think it was an actual deliberate scam. They probably thought they could do what they claimed and the hardware would be easy. They probably still think they can deliver something, hence no real obligation for an automatic refund. Not that they have any legal requirement to refund anything anyway. But they did publicly offer a refund to anyone who wanted one which is good, and it appears they are at least following through on doing that.

They could easily afford to hire an expert at a few hundred bucks per hour to evaluate new hardware campaigns

I usually still wear a t-shirt in winter here in Sydney most days.

Samsung WB2000 on a stick. I need a better camera with a front or flip LCD so I can see the frame. I'm relying on the 24mm wideangle to get everything.

Most definitely. Still on the low 20's here.

"The new dirsuptors" is a great podcast where often crowdfunded projects are discussed with their creators. Highly recommended if you're intrested in the broader picture of a crowdfunding campaign.

Yeah, new Railraods always cost time. In Germany we argue about Y-Trasse for 20 years now. Thanks Dave!

Seems like a nice neighborhood, too bad about the traffic and really narrow walkways. Do you cycle on the car road?

Since I'm at work when Neighbours is on, and Steve Irwin went to the big Croc Rodeo in the sky, this is the place I come to get a dose of Aussie accent.

I saw one for a filament extruder for 3D printing, it was based upon the open source model invented by the 83 year old inventor Hugh Lyman.

Great to see an independent review of these crowd-sourced projects!

Perhaps the site's like Kickstart etc may be interested in linking to your blog? It would only add credibility to the genuine projects, and give investors more confidence.

I've seen a few sus ones myself....

Good on ya Dave :)

Can't believe people in Australia aren't scared out of their pants everytime they go out of their house...

I have an idea for using crowd sourcing for a good cause, but I have no idea how to protect it from turning into fraud or people trying to fraud it.

They'll either be sued by Arduino or Spark if they are using their main board then selling it on as their own just with Wi-Fi.

I imagine that most of the electronics stuff on ks/igg is a case of "This would be really cool and I bet it's easy to make.. I just need the money for the boards and components!". Once they secure funding and order the stuff they need in "Oh shit, making stuff is actually a lot harder than I thought"
