That part where Obama and Biden are beating the year 2010 with bats cracks me up to this day

Watching old JibJab videos really helps remind me what a political Scandal used to look like, and how it has so fundamentally changed.

*LYRICS*

We arrived in ’09 on a rainbow of hope,
But two thousand ten blew it all up in smoke.
From Tea Party rallies,
To banks going broke,
So long to ya two thousand ten!

You got no jobs despite all my spending!
We passed health care, they shouted, “Repeal!”

So old Joe went on national TV, and said,
“IT’S A REAL BIG [BEEP]’IN DEAL!”

Earthquakes, volcanoes,
Bond bailouts in Greece,
That well from BP gushed for 12 [beep]in’ weeks!

From Mosques at Ground Zero,
To damn Wikileaks,
So long to ya, two thousand ten.

I passed finance reform, placed a justice,
Yet, my ratings they plunged through the floor.
I got Rangel, McChrystal and Karzai,
And no credit for “ending” a war!

Don’t ask, Don’t Tell,
Palin, Beck, Jihad Jane,
Michelle taking [beep] ‘cuz she whizzed off to Spain!
Oh, two thousand ten, we can’t wait for you,
To jet like that guy from Jet Blue!

They shellacked us real good in the mid-terms.
We were so sad when Rahm said “Goodbye”
Russian spies, Times Square bombs, Immigration,
Cal-ee-fornia just wants to get high!

Inherited wars, and mountains of debt,
Gridlocked politicians and nuclear threats,
As President that seems to be what you get,
That’s why I want one-
He only wants one-
Just give me a damn cigarette!

So long to two thousand ten!

0:07 - Rainbows! They appear often in the sky, you'll most likely see them after a rainstorm passes by :)
0:11 - "Hope" was the word often use to describes Obama's presidency during it's beginnings. Though this was used more prominently during his pre and immediate post election win (which was 2008), and so them falling off of "Hope" was most likely a jab at how Americans would see a sort of change in his political stances and effects compared to when he started his campaign.
0:14 - The Tea Party Movement that saw a rise in "small-government, fiscally conservative" policies and activism amongst conservatives, right-wing libertarians, and even parts of the Republican Party at the time (this movement most likely helped in reactions later in the video, like a butterfly effect of sorts).
0:17 - A foreclosure crisis occurred amongst some of the big banks due to halting mortgages and foreclosures agreements after it was revealed that "robo-signers" we're handing out improper foreclosures, this did not help the ongoing mortgage crisis at that point, and led to a small panic for investors of these banks.
0:22 - Understand at the time, the economic recession was just healing, so government was spending a lot of money, but the effects we're taking a while to settle through, and at this point of Obama's presidency, unemployment was at it's highest, reaching nearly 10% of the total American workforce.
0:25 - The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, was finally signed into law that year, immediately facing various challenges, political oppositions on both sides, and saw the National Federation of Independent Business launch it's attack against the law (foreshadowing).
0:36 - The Haiti Earthquake of 2010 that saw a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rock the big coastal cities of Haiti, affecting nearly 3 million people, and completely destroying 30, 000 buildings, turning many of the big cities into rubble, and disrupting the water system, leaving many either dehydrated or sickened from the now contaminated water from cholera.
0:37 - The eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland, caused air travel disruption in the North Atlantic.
0:38 - Suffering from the turmoil of the Great Recession, Greece, which had a debt-to-GDP ration of about 105% in 2008, shot up to 146% by 2010. Wages fell, unemployment rose, and a bunch of shady stuff being done by the government (hiding the real debt percentages, budget deficit revisions, credit default swaps) led to a distrust against the Greek economy by investors and international finances, thus requiring them to use bailout loans by whatever monetary groups gave it to them. This wasn't even the worst of it btw.
0:40 - An oil rig known as Deepwater Horizon (owned by BP) exploded in the Gulf Of Mexico, resulting in an extraordinarily large oil spill that lasted for 87 days (or about 12.4 weeks). It was the worst environmental disaster ever seen and displaced the Gulf Of Mexico's aquatic life and habitat, along with the coastal lines of some few states, for years after.
0:44 - A proposed Islamic community center and mosque that would have just so happened to have been a few blocks from where the Twin Towers fell. Hilarity ensues and the plan was most likely scrapped after national backlash.
0:45 - Wikileaks disclosed and revealed the Afghan War Diary and later the Iraq War logs, which covered daily logs, covers, and reports by various field outlets and military documents from 2004-2009 of U.S. Army activities in both Afghanistan and Iraq, showing some rather classified files on what was really occurring in those places.
0:51 - In response to the ruling of the Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court case, Obama pushed for the DISCLOSE Act, which would have reformed how campaign finances work during election season, and also nominated Elena Kagan on the Supreme Court after Justice Steven's retirement (she made it, but not the DISCLOSE Act).
0:54 - Obama's approval ratings amongst pools had stagnated between 45-55%, a decline from his 60-65% approval ratings when entering office.
0:58 - Charles Rangel, a U.S. representative for New York, was found guilty over ethics violations and failing to disclose rental income. Stanley McChrystal, a general promoted as commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, would soon resign in the wake of his personal comments on the current administration in a Rolling Stone article. Hamid Karzai, the President of Afghanistan at the time, had less-than-good relations with Obama, and had begun talking with other less-Western nations, including Russia, about the future of his tenure in Afghanistan.
1:01 - Operation New Dawn is put into effect, and all combat brigades would be out of Iraq by August, though troops would stay until next year, which technically means the Iraq War didn't officially end until 2011, and this was only temporary.
1:05 - The Don't Ask Don't Tell Repeal Act was passed that year, allowing openly gay, lesbian and bisexuals to serve in the military without being turned away.
1:07 - Both Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck launched their own shows on Fox News, known as the Sarah Palin's Alaska (ok it's TLC but it was segmented a lot on Fox) and The Glenn Beck Program, often cooperating together as guests.
1:07 - Colleen LaRose, known as Jihad Jane until her public arrest, was an American citizen charged and sentenced for planning various terrorist crimes and aiding suspicious individuals in Europe after converting to Islam.
1:08 - Michelle Obama took vacay days to Spain, hilarity ensues over taxpayer costs and overall "unprofessionalism."
1:12 - After landing at the airport, a Jetblue flight attendant announced he quit his job over the PAS, grabbed a few beers, and then immediately deploying the evacuation slide and slid down to the tarmac before taking off in his Jeep, he was later arrested at his home while banging up his wife.
1:19 - The Republican Party gained many seats during the 2010 Midterm Elections, including flipping 63 seats in the House, making a clear majority. In the Senate, they gained 6 seats, though they did not hold the majority their, it was still gains, which made Democrats fearful.
1:23 - Rahm Emanuel, White House Chief of Staff, resigned soon after gaining the position in order to run for Mayor of Chicago, which he got.
1:27 - A network of Russian sleeper agents known as the Illegals Program were founded and soon apprehended and traded for political prisoners in Russia by the FBI.
1:27 - A car was found to be blowing smoke in Times Square, soon to be found with a bomb inside that failed to detonate in spite of the fact that the car literally went up in flames. Soon after the perpetrator, Faisal Shahzad, was arrested and tried under federal court.
1:28 - Arizona SB 1070 was a law that passed in Arizona that was notorious for it's very broad and very strict anti-immigration policies, it's considered one of the strictest anti-immigration laws in the United States and had to be challenged by the Supreme Court to knock off some of the more controversial sections of the law.
1:30 - California Proposition 19 was a statewide proposition vote to try and legalize marijuana in the state of California, it failed.
1:34 - Critics put blame on Obama for continuing both the Afghanistan and Iraq War despite campaign promises.
1:36 - United States debt to GDP ratio starts closing in on each other, shooting up to nearly 80%.
1:37 - Gridlocks between politicians in the House and Senate, most likely from the Midterm Elections.
1:39 - Bushehr I Nuclear Power Plant had finished construction and was ready to open soon, giving Iran a boost in nuclear fuel and supply and scaring most Western nations.
1:56 - Ending off the sing along, that basketball wasn't just added for the lulz. Obama actually had to get stitches on his lips after getting smacked by Rey Decerega during a basketball game at Fort McNair. No, Rey was not tackled by Secret Service nor was Obama hit by the basketball itself, but the fact the Wiki doesn't leave a reference point behind this part is odd cuz it did happen in a way lol.

I have tried finding a replacement for JibJab's yearly reviews, but they all suck. The singing is borderline awful or just plain flat, focuses too much on the singers and not on the content of the year, and are just plain not good...
