Overall crime has jumped significantly in NYC year over year, but it's still well below the numbers the city endured in the '90s.

Retired Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce was on the streets fighting the surge of crime back then and joined Eyewitness News to discuss how NYC can get the feeling of safety back.

Reform the bail laws, vote out politicians who support them, and prosecute crimes

I think that is half the job. We have criminally insane people roaming the streets. They were released from prison due to the pandemic. They never received treatment while in jail. They got worse and were released into the public. Those are the random acts of violence. In broad daylight, in front of camera lookin up.

I agree defund the police was too quick and too romanticized. It should have been something else. Rebranding doesn't do much. Reform should have been the answer. It allocates resources where properly needed, reimagines the policing landscape, and allows for negotiations.
