It is clearly a very old fortress castle, where residents needed protection from the weather and marauders. The stones were what they had to build and pave with and now the stonework would cost a prohibitive fortune. Life was so primitive by our standards back then and yet they lived in a castle that had the best of what was on offer in that society. Things change, yet the human heart is no less pure or evil than it was in the day of Robert Stewart. Apparently, it was a happy retreat sort of place for Mary, Queen of Scots. But if you were involved in court intrigues, clearly the place to kill an enemy was in the narrow winding stairwells. Rich wall hangings of long ago would have helped to keep the damp out. So they do have people working there, but no one is in residence or actually uses it for any portion of their yearly life spent in Scotland anymore, though it's privately owned? It's nice that when you look outside, you see people about so the place does not seem totally forlorn, abandoned. It is good when these properties, in addition to renovations needed, can offer locals some employment for tours or in the gift shop.
