In the early 80s when I was 13 I was totally absorbed by the dramatic sound of Killing Joke and Bauhaus - Joy Division tapes were passed to me but I was too stupid to fully appreciate their subtle atmospheric music. Now at the tender age of 50 and doing another round of chemotherapy I’m totally obsessed with Unknown Pleasures. It’s the record that’s going to get me through this (and more).

the name “Unknown Pleasures” is probably the coolest name for a rock album. just the name itself attracted me to listen to the album. shadowplay and interzone is my faves.

Confession: I never listened to Joy Division in my life. The way Henry just explained them, I immediately searched them on spotify, you are correct Mr. Rollins.... GENIUS!!!!

I enjoy listening to the older Rollins..Age brings humility and knowledge.

Henry Rolling should honestly start a music review channel. His delivery and summary of it is sublime.

JD are as great as any band that ever existed.
Even better, they're quite unique.
There's unlikely to be another band like them.

idk how to explain it, but there's just something hypnotic about Joy Division's music. i can't stop listening, Rollins is absolutely right. picked up the Unknown Pleasures vinyl and here we are.

i'd say my favourites are Leaders of Men and Transmission.

I’m just discovering them at 57 years old
I agree with everything he said. Back in the day, you only heard music the radio stations played and in Pittsburgh there were no radio stations that played music like theirs.

Joy Division created catastrophically gorgeous music.

Their music hypnotizes, inviting the listener to experience the pain of its author; the genius Ian

One of the few bands that really mattered. God bless JD 🖤

I love seeing him lighting up talking about Joy Division. It's a phenomenal Album. I remember first hearing Disorder when I was playing Skate 3 at the age of 12 or some such. I stumbled upon Joy Division one or two years ago and was absolutely in shock when I realized that they were the band that made that song. I have used Spotify since 2015 and despite that this one album catapulted Joy Division to my #2 lifetime most heard artist. It is that good.

After reading a glowing review Unknown Pleasures in Rolling Stone magazine of all places, circa 1980-81, I went to Middle Earth records, Downey, CA, and asked the long haired hippie type guy behind the counter if they had the album. He jumped up and RAN full speed to where the album at giddy as can be that someone was about to discover Joy Division. I must have had extra $ on me because I asked him to recommend something else current that he liked. He grabbed Discharge “Why?”. I bought them both and I absolutely loved JD and probably the next week the same for New Order.
Discharge on the other hand was much more of a grindcore type of acquired taste. I never bought anything by them again. JD and NO on the other hand I got my hands on anything and everything I could by them. Even emulating the way they dressed. Still do to a certain extent to this day :-)

Got to agree with Henry on this one. I didn't know anything about the band but I picked it from a local record store in 87 or 88 simply because the cover art intrigued me. Rode the bus home and immediately gave it a spin. I was completely blown away and have been a fan ever since. RIP Ian

That first joy division record is literally the point when punk went from "FUCK YOU!" to "I'm fucked."

I was just saying this the other day. I think I like Closer more, because I was in college when it came out and it was my first introduction to Joy Division. There is nothing like Joy Division. Number one band for me.

Classic album, i prefer closer though and I prefer the 12 inch version of she's lost control but I agree their music is not for everyone, joy divisions music helped me get through a very dark time in my life and for that I give thanks! I still listen to them now on a regular basis no matter how I am feeling, I feel the music and lyrics totally therapeutic.

Bernard Sumner's guitar is also underrated

Got introduced to Joy Division through the New Order song "Elegia, " which I was introduced to by a trailer for MGSV. Definitely a talented group of musicians and it was saddening to have hear about Ian's story.
