Live Editing Sessions - Capture One - 22nd July 2020

We started today's session with a huge audio-sync issue for the first 1.5 minutes - but don't worry, it got fixed before we started editing! ;-)

Beginning with an issue of missing teleconverter lens profiles, we explored the Base Characteristics area of an image, looking at the difference in starting with "Auto" vs "Linear Response" curve can have.

We covered how to use the Description field on import to be able to search effortlessly throughout your entire catalog - without needing to use the keyboarding functionality, and explored the way that some external programs import data using XMP Sidecar files.

We touched on the outskirts of the huge topic of matching screens to print (hint: you'll NEVER get a 100% match, regardless of what a monitor salesman will tell you!) but the key is getting as close as possible, rather than a screen that behaves like a literal sheet of paper.

Moving onto images, we cover clarity and HDR tools, for wildlife shots - gradient masks and crop/straiten tools for landscapes, and adjusting the presence of the background with levels and curves when necessary.

Join us for live editing in Capture One - with your own images -

We recommend requesting the HD option from YouTube for full 1080p screen captures.

Recorded using Capture One Pro v20.1.1 on an Apple Mac Pro 16-core Xeon with 192GB memory, 2x Radeon Pro Vega II Graphics cards and 4TB SSD.

Paul, this is the first time I fully understand when to use linear response and when not. Your example with city scapes and using AUTO opened my eyes. Then again losing details and starting with linear response made it clear. Many thanks, enjoy watching your C1 sessions. Not always live unfortunately.

I am using Capture One for a while now, but watching your videos I still can learn a lot. I hope I can join the next live sessions

Paul, always learn something from your videos. The tip about using description field was good. Thanks.

thanks for the tip on linear mode ! This comes in very handy as I do quite some photographing of ouessant sheep (black) in rich green meadows in the sun...this is not the easiest contrast to capture, but the linear mode really helps !

First time viewer (might be second🤪), not even a Capture One user 😆...but learning editing on any software can generally apply to other software.

Regarding extenders not being calibrated with focal lengths such as 50mm, is (IMO) because extenders are mainly used on longer focal lengths (for wildlife). Using an extender with short focal lengths is not "normal", for lack of better words. A x1.4 extender with a 50mm or even a 100mm would give you 70mm and 140mm respectively, just doesn't really make sense to me with the loss of F-stop for say a few meters in viewing distance..maybe I'm missing the benefit of using them on short focal lengths? Minus macro lenses & other than not affording to own all focal lengths.

Are you not able to import lens data from a lens database? (sorry, I forget the lens database site address) I'm using DxO PhotoLab (+Affinity Photo/Nik Collection), there is a database to DL from if PhotoLab doesn't recognize the lens automatically, along with camera body.

Thanks for time, this is a good session/lesson/tips, nice to see you use your viewers images to apply your techniques.

Cheers,

Another great video. I have the Fuji version of C1, is there a difference between that and the full blown version?

Very great Tutorial - as always! Thx!
@Exif-Data: Sometimes i would need the possibility to batch-change date and time data. Imagine the use of 2 or more cameras (eg at a wedding) and the date-/time-settings of one of them is wrong. So to fit all the images chronologically, there is the need of batch-changing the images of this camera for a certain amount. Is there a possibility to this in Capture One? If "no", wouldn't that be a nice feature?

May I ask you a question? If I import a tif file into C1 ( this could be a focus stack, a Pano etc.) the WB. Is always marked exactly at 5000 Kelvin. coincidence? Or what can be the reason therefore?
Thanks a lo, Mister C1

With Curves being as powerful as it is, why use Levels to bring in the Highlights & Shadows to stretch the contrast range, instead of Curves?
