There are worse ways of getting acquainted with Japanese cinema than by simply looking up which directors had their films scored by Takemitsu, and then watching as many of them as you can. It's a solid list, so long as you don't forget Ozu and Mizoguchi.

He is a composer of film music, isn't he? He captures the theme flowing at the bottom of the movie in a moment, moreover, he fleshes out a depth and gives a strong impact to it.
I think there was no other composer with a unique sensibility like him in the world.

Film Music by Takemitsu is such a sick album. It was on heavy rotation for me back in 2013 -- one of the tracks was even set as my wake up alarm

This must have inspired the Old boy Waltz... Quite similar. The competition between Korea and Japan seems to be on every level.

A great piece which will of course will never be accused of 'cultural appropriation' purely because Takemitsu was Japanese and not a 'white male'. Long live freedom of expression!
