From Petersburg to Five Forks, from Sailor's Creek to High Bridge, destiny finally awaits Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in the small Virginia town of Appomattox. We begin our tour at the little known site of the Battle of Appomattox Station (preserved by the members of the American Battlefield Trust) before heading to Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. The stories surrounding the action around Appomattox Courthouse are among the most compelling of the war. I grew up near this area and my first book, Bruce Catton's American Heritage Civil War, was purchased for me by my dear late Father in 1972 at the Appomattox gift shop when I was nine years old that began my lifelong love of the Civil War. I am so grateful to him for that. The story continues. My son and I revisited this wonderful place last year.
