Tolkien also based the different races on real cultures and people, the orcs are based on the ottoman empire, probably the turks, they where the scourge of the east that tried to conquer the west. Everything of the eastern empire is actually depicted as evil. Orcs, men in turbans, Oliphants and on it goes xD

The inspiration for the Battle of Helm's deep got alot from the siege of Vienna with the Winged Hussars storming down the mountainside to break the siege of the ottomans. The ottomans also planted explosives under the wall to blew it up. Out numbered fifteen to one, short on supplies with no chance to escape. The Winged Hussars came down the mountainside in the darkest hour and completely ran over the ottomans. But I believe the Battle for Minas Tirith is even more based on the Winged Hussars charge to save the city.

The assult on Minas Tirith is probably based a good bit on the siege of Vienna since the Vienna had beacons that was supposed to be lit when the city was in need. In Vienna though they didn't lit them due to Leopolds negligence, compare that to Denethor xD Jan Sobieski, the Polish king saved the Austrians at the end of the battle with the greatest cavalry charge in history! Tolkien based alot of the LotR on history and much of the battles have their inspiration from the struggles between the west and the ottoman empire.

The orcs are based on the muslims and they are depicted as the bad guys, the crusades for an example was the retaliation of the west after several centuries of ottoman oppression in the west. The final battle of the LotR drew much inspiration from the crusades in the east to finish it once and for all xD

Remember that Tolkien both was a professor in History and a devoted Catholic! So there is no wonder that he depicted the catholic west as the noble good guys and the muslim east a Orcs and Evil xD

Also noticed that he based the Dwarves on Jews, a rich people that have closer encounters and more struggles against the orcs than any other people and that they lost they where driven from thier homeland. A Rich people without a homeland that lives spread out all over the western world. Tolkien got alot from real history and based alot of his races on the common views folk had about other people!

Pretty good. I think this battle was based of the siege of Vienna. Tolkien confirmed that the Rohirrim were based off of the winged hussars.

This is the perfect combination of lotr and sabaton. It feels like this was made for each other.
