How to Make Oobleck (Chemistry)

Показать описание
Oobleck is a simple and safe non-Newtonian fluid that you can make at home. While it seems a bit like an oobleck 'slime', experiment with this substance that appears to be a liquid and a solid all at once. You only need cornstarch and water for this experiment, but food coloring makes it more exciting.

▶️ Get the supplies for this oobleck recipe:

▶️ How to make oobleck:
Step 1: Add 5-6 drops of food coloring to 1 cup of water.

Step 2: Measure out ¼ to ⅓ cup of cornstarch. This is not an exact measurement since you can adjust how much water you add in your next step.

It's time for the most important step—adding the water to the cornstarch.

Step 3: Start by adding a small amount of water to the cornstarch. You don't want to add too much or the non-Newtonian nature of Oobleck will be lost. Mixing the water into the cornstarch is sometimes really difficult because of the non-Newtonian nature of Oobleck, but it's really important that you mix all of the water in before you add any more.

▶️ How oobleck works:
Adding too much water will create a watery solution without any non-Newtonian properties. The way you can tell you got the right amount of water is that it crumbles in your hand like a solid, but when you let your hand standstill, it drips off of it like a liquid. If you put your fingers gently on the surface of Oobleck, they will slowly seep into the fluid. However, if you try to yank them out quickly, it will hang on to them and not let go. These strange properties are why Oobleck is considered a non-Newtonian fluid.

I didn't know this had a name! Me and my bf accidentally made oobleck as we were trying to make boba with tapioca starch, water and sugar lol. It was a fun discovery but salvaging the dough was stressful because I didn't know what to do with it. We ended up fixing the problem but never knew how till I looked up how this was made :3

In the start when he was pouring the cornstarch, guess you could say it was over the edge🤣 (sorry bad dad joke)

Just fyi, this is a lot of fun HOWEVER it is said to have a high probability of clogging drains so please put as much as possible in a plastic bag or trash can. Do not wash down the drain.

When did this start being called “oobleck”? It was just cornflower and water when I was a kid.
