Woodturning: Using Milk Paint to Make a Lidded Walnut Bowl Pop!

Over the last 3 years, I've made bowls, lidded boxes, and hollow forms, but never a lidded bowl. I like experimenting in my shop so I wanted to try making a lidded bowl. If that wasn't experimentation enough, I wanted to paint perfectly good wood. Now I know that's going to upset some people, but I really like the contrast between the rich dark walnut and the blue paint. I think it turned out pretty well, but I'm biased. Please let me know down in the comments what you think.

I hope you enjoy this video. Please let me know if there is a project you'd like to see me make and I will do my best to do it. Thank you for all the support you have shown me and the channel!

Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.

Such a handsome bowl. I favor the natural wood like Glen does, and also agree that the blue does look really nice. Maybe the mellowing, Glen, has more to do with needing a little calming and bright colors in our lives as we age. The blue is very soothing.

Every wood turner sands to 1000 grit and throws on a shine. I have said with your other projects, I find it refreshing to see something done differently. Well done!

I love it, can't always be a purist. Beautiful piece.

My response 30 years ago to paint and stains was: "No. if God wanted it some other color he would have made it that way." So I really liked your bowl before the paint. In fact I thought it was outstanding. But I must have mellowed in my old age because I do like your painted version. I cannot say I like it better but I do like it. So thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.

It is really pretty. Finished up nicely. But...I have to admit I loved the finished piece before the paint. However, you are the artist and it is up to you to follow your heart and I fully understand that. Kudos to you Sir. 💕😊💕🇺🇸

I'm one of the guys that loves to keep a figured piece so that the figure is visible. Does that mean I'm going to throw rocks at you or others? Nope. Ours is an art. Not all artists agree on what they prefer to do. I'm glad to see you left parts of the piece natural. I like the final result in it's totality! Nice work Ed! God bless.

The contrast is excellent. Great idea. Would I do it, maybe.... Yep, more than likely.

Hey Ed,

The wood turning worked out well. Nice shape and nice fitting lid.

As for my personal taste, I would have left the bowl natural. But, it’s not my bowl and go with what ever floats your boat. It’s still a nice wood turning to be proud showing it off.

Also, you learn by experimenting with different color schemes and techniques. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color or new turning techniques. When turning the inside, remember to ride the bevel and try making those transitions from a vertical wall to a horizontal bowl bottom.

The question is Do You Like It ? Would you paint another one in a similar fashion ? Me, I prefer subtle earth tones that let the wood through and color for accents. No worries Ed, it is still a real beauty !! Keep 'em coming👍 Take care. -Mike😷

It came out quite nice, Ed. I'm a walnut lover, so you know what that means. LOL. Personally, I would have chosen a dye for contrast, but that's just me, my friend. Keep turning, buddy!

If you want to be accountable you must own what you do. I don't like paint but how would I know if someone didn't dare to be different. Kim Tippin does it as well and guess what you both manage to pull it off perfectly. Not sure about the 2020. But I liked the bowl

That was a great contrast as well as making it elegant, what was your inspiration to use the blue color with the dark wood?. I enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing your video.
