Kurama has 8 Tails out of the 9 Tails when he was out of Naruto.
So, Kurama left 1 Tail inside of Naruto to keep him alive. Since the Eight Trigrams Seal has been open, Kurama can willingly leave Naruto’s body whenever he pleases, but doesn’t because it would kill Naruto. Well, he wouldn’t kill Naruto if he did since Naruto has the Chakra of other Tailed Beast + he’s an Uzumaki.

But Kurama left it inside of him just in case.

The reason why he is still alive is that during the war he got the other half of kurama. So that is why he is able to separate some portion of the kurama and keep the other half of kurama inside him. You only die if the chakra is completely removed.
