Carefree, eccentric Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand) has a suitcase with an encyclopedia and a nightgown--and eyes for repressed, eccentric Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal). Howard has a suitcase full of igneous rocks to prove an esoteric musical theory and an overly proper fiancée named Eunice (Madeline Kahn). None of them know Mr. Smith (Michael Murphy), who has a suitcase full of top-secret government documents and a nefarious man tailing him. Add another suitcase full of jewels, a crooked hotel detective and a jealous musicologist.

You might notice that she keeps repeatedly calling Howard by the name "Steve" in the film for no obvious reason at all. This is a reference to the film To Have and Have Not where Lauren Becall's character keeps calling Humphrey Bogart's character Harry Morgan by the name Steve, also for no reason shown on screen beyond the fact that he calls her "Slim" instead of her real name of Marie. Steve and Slim were the nicknames that Howard Hawks and his wife Nancy called each other by. So two Howards but the same nickname. This also implies that one of Judy's many failed areas of study was film history.
