Hmmm, I'm a newbie quilter. So far, have selected and cut my own fabrics.
The cons you mentioned (&other comments) outweigh the pros.
Thanks for the heads-up everyone

Pros and cons of monthly subscription boxes would be a good video. Just a suggestion.

I am doing a bom from Missouri star that I am very frustrated with. Very stingy with the fabric and unclear instructions. But I have been happy with most of the kits that I have bought. It helps if the fabric designer is one that you know, then you know that the quality of the fabric will be good. Sometimes I buy kits online because the fabric is cheaper, and then I may not use it for that pattern. It saves me some money because I don’t have a quilt shop near me and I have to buy all of my fabric online. Thanks for the timely video!

I buy kits from really reputable online, FAT QUARTER SHOP, MISSOURI STAR, never had an issue! Thank you for your insights!

I wouldn't normally do a kit quilt, but I loved the laser cut curved pieces in a kit by the Flynn family's business. Laser cutting seems to keep the edges from fraying.

I discovered all of your points on my own as a beginner, wish videos like yours were available way back when! Upside is I did learn a lot. A downside for Canadians is that ordering online can result in shipping costs that make it not worth doing as some sites don’t give you a choice of method. I would contact the seller, some of them will help you out. Finally, thanks to not being able to resist a sale, I have a stash of quilt kits. Some sellers will substitute fabrics, so, “not as shown”, but mostly I love the colours I got. If I never use the pattern, I will use the fabric!

I like buying a kit from a local quilt shop when they have made up the sample because I can see it. My LQS also adds in notes from the person who made up the sample.

I bought a kit for a wall hanging because I liked the display model. It was at a quilt show.. She was out of kits so I ordered one. It was terrible: very bad instructions and fabric shortage. I contacted her because I found a missing fabric piece but used some from my stash though she offered to send me a piece. I should have waited to contact her because a couple of the pieces provided were way, way to small. I also bought a small kit at the show from her and the instructions were wrong. Now a BOM I bought from The Fat Quarter shop was great. It had wonderful instructions and quite a bit extra fabric each month.

I've bought kits from connecting threads . Their kits are not cut for you, and you get a generous supply. Thanks for the good tips on one's that are already cut. I may not have thought about that.

Your background reminds me of the magic pictures that they used have everywhere! Remember the ones that you had to stare at to see the hidden object? I loved those.

I almost never buy kits because I would rather use my own fabric. But I have bought them on the rare occasion because they were baby quilts and I liked the pattern and colors. The one from a random shop at a quilt show turn out to have shorted me on several of the fabrics on one of the quilts. The other, also from a show but by a local, well regarded store gave me lots of extra fabric but the pattern instructions from the fabric manufacturer had a glaring error. It was a large panel with pieced borders. The first direction was to cut the panel to a specific length. That length was longer than the printed panel! And it had manufacturing, copyright information and salvages that still needed removed. Good thing I can do math and figured out how to adjust the pieced borders with the smaller panel than the directions gave. Mistakes happen, people are human.

I bought a quilt kit and I am finding that the 10" by 10" squares are not 10 x 10. They are all short on one side. Plus, the fabric is not squared off! Very disappointing. I just finished all the cutting and I am ready to start assembling the quilt. I'm hoping this "shortage" will not affect the piecing. The company has now changed names and I understand they are not very responsive to customer service requests. Lesson learned - I will buy my own fabric from now on.

When I buy a kit, I tend to change some of the fabric

I’ve never purchased a quilt kit before, just for the last reason you spoke about. I’m so afraid I’m going to make a mistake and not be able to match the poorly cut piece up.

Kim, is there any way you can put closed captioning on your videos? It would be so helpful to me and I’m sure others.

Another con is that you are locked into the size of the quilt.
