Also can't talk about this movie without mentioning the sound design, I love the part where he feeds his girlfriend and the sounds of her chewing are replaced by screeching and crunching metal

HELL YES. One of my favorite films of all time. It’s like if Hausu and Eraserhead had a baby.

Finally saw "House" a few days ago. Without recalling the details of your review offhand, it certainly didn't include much preparation for "House" as a piece of cinema. I will say that it doesn't feel like it was made in 1977. It feels like it was made in 2077 ... in an underground lab ... by a peg-legged cyborg goblin.

The humour in this film brings to mind an epigraph by Georges Bataille to his story Madame Edwarda, in which he writes "If you laugh, it's only because you are scared".

I was recently blown away by Tsukamoto's adaptation of "Fires on the Plain" ("Nobi"), a story of a Japanese soldier left for dead in the jungles of Philippines at the end of WW2 and his descent into madness brought upon by his starvation. I think it captured the tone of Ōoka Shōhei's novel better, or more viscerally than Ichikawa's 1959 version, widely regarded as a classic of Japanese cinema. The Third Window DVD/Blu-ray also has a fascinating, hour-long interview with Tsukamoto, where he talks about the deep impact the novel had on him and his art.

Hi maggie I don't know if you are going to see this or not, but I saw this video soon after it came out and made sure to put tetsuo as a movie I would watch later. I have now seen it. I had a really good experience watching it. I came back and watched the review and I more or less agree with everything you have said. I'm glad that you put this review up because I'm not sure if I would have seen it if you didn't make this review. At the very least it would have taken me a lot long to find it. I like movies and short films that has a unique art style. I have never film like tetsuo and I'm probably not going to see a film like it again. Thanks Maggie.

Can you please do David Cronenberg's Crash or atleast Dead Ringers?! And loved your review for this film, you've convinced me to view this film now!

'964 Pinocchio' is a little bit more grotesque but shares the same style as Tetsuo. Very bizarre but yet I enjoyed it.

Definitely check a small plot synopsis before checking this out. Very heavy subject material in this flick!

I've known of Tetsuo (+sequel) for yonks but still haven't watched it, for shame! 😄 But being reminded of it here will help fast track it to the top of my pile. I have seen A Snake Of June though, I imagine equally as viscerally surreal and interesting a study of the subconscious as Tetsuo.

Sounds like a more interesting Iron Man than Marvel's.

The subtitled line near the end, “I feel great”… sums it all up

I'm so glad I found this channel, hot damn. Anyway, TETSUO is my second favorite film and I'm glad to see it covered.
Cyberpunk is mentioned a handful of times in this review, and for good reason, but I believe to truly hit the bullseye with this movie the soundscape needs to be front and center. Its cyberpunky in visual, sound, and style because I feel its definitively an ebm/industrial music video.
Those genres crawled out of punk in the late 70s-early 80s and started to become more popular in the 90s, so the release fits right into that zeitgeist. Commonly when industrial music pops up, NIN isnt far behind (as well it should be), but some 'purer' examples of the genre are Skinny Puppy and Front 242. SP's 'Assimilate' or Front 242's 'Headhunter' could be serviced well with scenes from this movie, so much so that I'd believe Tsukamoto took inspiration from the music as much as he did from Lynch for style.
Ah...I feel great.

In my top 5 horror films ever made! I watched it and reviewed it some time last year and just thought it was so unique, unsettling and masterful. 10/10 for me. Glad to hear that you also love it.

A Blu-ray is available in the UK. In the US, you can currently buy a $5 digital copy of Tetsuo the Iron Man at iTunes or Amazon Prime. It has the same restored blank-and-white picture in HD as the Blu-ray.

Nice review, I agree this is a great film. I like Tsukamoto's films 'Kotoko' and especially 'Snake of June' even more.
