Sailboat on Fire in Luperon, Dominican Republic

Early on Sunday, October 31, a boat called Silver Streak caught fire in Luperon Harbor. At the time of this video's posting, the the owner, Brock, is safe, but fled the boat with essentially nothing—not even clothes on his back.

The fire has been extinguished. The boat has sunk.

We would like to try and help Brock in any way we can. Right now the community of cruisers is working to get him basic things, like shoes and a phone for communication. He is staying on a friend's boat. We will update the description of this video with information for those who want to help, and hopefully post a follow-up video as we learn more.

TO DONATE TO BROCK:

We will update this description as more information becomes available.

Wow that sucks. I can't imagine how awful that would be and the sence of helplessness you would feel. At least nobody got hurt.

Lithium batteries can be very dangerous. Can easily start a fire.

So tragic but he is safe! And surrounded by Sailors like me; therefore HOW CAN I HELP!

Sorry for Brock's loss, I'm sure we can help out and get him back on his feet. One thing I will consider having read through the comments, is a metal charging safe. Perhaps a double-walled metal locker with some kind of extinguisher connected, to at least give us a fighting chance to escape or throw it overboard in such an event. I'd rather be prepared than see this outcome. Food for thought!

Do you know how the fire started, and were their batteries lithium ion or lithium-iron-phosphate?

Tragedy, hope he recovers well from the loss. Now with only living on boats I keep concern on fire safety. Double+ the CG requirements of fire extinguishers. Inside and outside companionway, galley.
Possible a good instructional subject. Along with insurance issues while away from home country.

i didn't press on the like button on this one, as it felt inappropriate . An old friend that does rescue in Antigua tells me he is seeing a lot of lithium fires, this may just be that whole coincidence thing, however i guess if you do have a lithium fire there is no way to put it out. This sort of thing must shake your community. be safe .

Would definitely like to hear more about this. Presumed cause, any factors that made it get out of control, etc. Please post as soon as they're set up to accept donations.

Glad they got out. A sad event to be sure but in the end the only irreplaceable thing is ones life.

Sad. :( and, more important, the owner is safe.

Will this affect water making for the others in the anchorage?
