Wharfedale - a village just north west of Leeds in Yorkshire, England. The "E" in the middle is silent.

I purchased a Nikko NR-1219 'monster' receiver in the early 1990s. Still going good today. I did obtain the service manual for it a few years ago, but it hasn't needed any repairs to date.

Kevin, good to find out your Dad is doing well.

I owned the Technics gear you featured. The trade referred to it as the "Flat Group." There was a more conventional FM-only tuner option in that series, which I owned rather than the pieces you featured here. The equalizer was superb, as it had parametric capabilities where each slider also had adjustments for midpoint and bandwidth. I powered it with twin power amps each set to mono, running a variety of speakers ranging from Magnepans to Definitive Technology. I wish I still had that gear, as it does not pop up online very often. Thanks for sharing!

Those Wharfedales are great speakers for their time. George Martin and David Gilmore had those as the speakers for their home systems back in the early 70's. I gave mine to my ex GF who played in a famous doom metal band along with a Fischer Tube receiver. I want the stereo gear back but not the girlfriend.

Have used Nikko equipment since the seventies. Their Pro Series is Very well made. All schematics are available. Not great but not as bad as others. Problem now is availability of replacement output FETs. Great specs. Great sound. 👍🏻

I love my ADS L570/2 and L780/2 speakers, I just wish that I had discovered them years ago instead of earlier this year. Prices for ADS are on the rise, and Richard So is the man for repairs.

Nikko stuff is awesome! I have two of the Alpha II’s and a 440 as my main amplifier. The build quality is outstanding.

my father in law had a Nikko Alpha VI in his main system. It was a beast and the big big (BIG) brother to the Alpha II. I think 300 watts per channel. I sold it after he died because my mother in law needed the money, but I really didn't want to! I really like Nikko gear it always looks great and has a nice clean sound > probably the only brand that I could see myself ditching my Yamahas for

Maaan, do I love the fact Nikko is completely forgotten and overlooked! I still have my Dads 1019 I grew up around, and you know what? The quality exceeds that of Marantz from the same era. I do plan at some point on down the road to grab up a discrete Nikko power amp to go with the 1019 and have somewhat of a hot rod vintage rig.

Great to hear your Dad is doing well! Sure hope he is getting that dexterity working and hopefully working his way back into some tinkering! Great video as always!

I've been running a Nikko Alpha 2 & 3 bi-wired to a pair of Kef towers for 35+ years! People are always amazed at the sound and imaging.

Couldn't believe when you showed the AVID speaker. I had a pair, but it was the bookshelf size, maybe 101? I like them. And yes, mine came with brown cloth and after a few years I purchased the blue color and installed them. Had them for many years.

No E. Had Nikko in the 70s in College. Sounded great, better than my room mate’s Pioneer. He agreed

I had those Avid speakers as a kid. My dad was into HiFi gear and when he upgraded, I got those Avids. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Hey Kevin. I used to own those Wharfdales. They were great during college long ago. Rescued them from a storage closet in my frat, no one wanted them, and fixed them up. I have no recollection of what happened to them. Great performers for sure.

The piece I wish I had held onto was an Akai 8-track tape recorder with nice dual VU meters. I think it may have been dual voltage like you were talking about. When I was in high school, I hated store bought 8-track tapes that would always have a song that faded out then Ka-Klunk, changed tracks always in the middle of a long song like Stairway to Heaven or Freebird. I would time out all the songs on an album so you wouldn't have that and use Maxell high quality tapes that I could buy at my local audio store where I could also drool over the Bose 901 speakers they had on display and always were playing through. I would get some empty space at one or two of the tracks but no interrupted songs. All my friends had me make tapes for them also. I agree with you on changing to LED lamps, I have an 88 Porsche 944 and you could barely see the incandescent dash lights on which the gauges were not backlit but reflection front lit and unreadable until I got a LED kit to convert it plus I'm not having to pull the cluster apart all the time when one would go out. You review the PL-518 direct drive turntable, my best friend had one of those and I had and still have the belt drive PL-512, I believe, and was always jealous that his had the pitch adjustment. Although, with mine I could remove the belt and turn the platter backwards by hand and listen to the ELO Fire on High song that has an intro that was backwards and when you played it backwards you could understand the message that we, for a long time, thought was spoken in Latin or something. He also had the better version of the Pioneer HPM-40 speakers than mine. I don't remember if it was a series II or something, but his woofer cones were white and mine gray and his had a watt rating that was actually 80 watts not 40, I think. I have a pair of Magnapan/Magna planar MG-1 speakers I'm going to sell. Have you ever repaired a pair of those? One of the tweeter arrays has a break in the conductor. I think I'll put them on Ebay.

Do you guys work on VCRs? I have several that were very special ones with slow-mo and a jog ring and even one that you can fast forward up to, I think, three times and it keeps the audio understandable by bypassing the empty spaces not just speeding it up. Really a unique capability. I can't find anyone to work on them anymore, they all need adjustment to keep from crinkling the edge of the tapes. I have a lot of home tapes that I'd like to put on DVD or just be able to watch that were recorded on VHS-C and I have the adapter for the regular full size VHS tape & machine.

A guy that does my major repairs recently bought a large cabinet of NOS Original parts from a lady who's husband died 20+ years ago, and she has all this stuff in storage units. When I went there a few weeks ago to pick up two receivers he worked on for me, he showed me the inventory stock in that cabinet. Brand new tape deck heads including vintage Pioneer and TEAC 3-headers, motors, tons of original Darlington and STK chips and wait for it.... I quart sized bag full of those Pioneer speaker connectors! All brand new and never opened.
