In 1968 most nuns who taught in our school exited their order. Prior to this exit, a couple of years before, the sister teaching us told us that in the future sisters might just wear a pin to signify their status as nuns. I remember covering my mouth in horror. Most of us in our grade 6 class were silent, taking it all in. She did not seem upset about it but a few years later, she also left the order.

I may not be old enough to remember when Sisters abandoned the Religious life in droves, but I do see the effects of it in the parochial schools...or whatever is left of them. In the Archdiocesan schools in St. Paul, Minnesota there are only 2 Sisters teaching at one school and none in all of the rest. Two schools here have been turned into public charter schools. One is turned into a Montessori preschool. One church and school is now a music school. Several schools here have been consolidated. Some more sit empty. One just closed last year.
It is a combination of the lack of Religious Sisters in the Catholic schools, the use of contraception which is widespread but forbidden by the Church, and the lack of clear guidance by the clergy in the role of parents and the necessity of parents sending their children to parochial schools wherever one is available. Before Vatican 2, parents were clearly taught about the necessity of a Catholic education. They were helped to educate their children and even given a free education when they were destitute. There were free Catholic schools for the poorest Catholic children operated by the Sacred Heart Sisters. Sisters made Catholic education inexpensive enough for the average family to afford it because they performed their role as teachers without any expectation of a salary. They did it as a ministry rather than regular staff who have to be paid thousands of dollars a year. Schools close because the overhead costs are a great deal higher than what they were when the teaching staff were mostly Sisters.
Vatican 2 was largely responsible for the collapse of the Catholic school system.

This is not real. It's from a film. Whatever is being read, it is NOT from any document of Vatican II. The religious habit was not done away with. Under the New Code of Canon Law, religious are to wear a habit, - whether a modified one or traditional.

Take the story of Sister Wilhelmina who did not give up wearing the habit and celebrating the mass in Latin, that she founded her own convent.

I remember our nuns in full habits in 1st grade, then the next school year they wore below the knee blue A-line skirts with a white blouse, blue cardigan, and a short blue veil, and a black low heeled pump. The next 6 months they dropped the veil. The next few years they wore whatever they wanted. After second grade all but two nuns were left in the school. When I started kindergarten there were 10 nuns teaching and more in our convent, and by the time I graduated 8th grade, 1 was teaching and 1 was principal. I had a 3rd grade lay teacher who wouldn’t allow us into church without a chapel veil or our school beanie on our heads. If we had neither she would bobby-pin a tissue on our heads. By the time I was in 5th grade…nothing on our heads was required in church. Nuns were no longer nuns, their capacity had been reduced to nothing.

This is not exactly what Vatican II said? I remember at the time It said "to simplify the habit". In fact 40 years ago nuns were reminded by Saint Pope John Paul II and told to "wear the signs of your consecration". This latter was said because nuns had not only thrown off the veil (a primary sign of consecration), thrown off the rosary on their belts, but they even took to wearing lay clothes all the time. Nuns have never claimed to be considered "above" the laity - not ever. This is because the structure of the Body of Christ, the Church is two tier only and not three tier. Two tier: Priests and Laity. It has never been 3 tier - Priests, religious and laity The Priest is in Persona Christi as Bridegroom and every one else is laity: the Bride of the Lamb. Anything different refers only to people's perception and respect, but in "status" it does not exist. Nuns witness to the bridal status of the laity. This prophetic role of witness to the Kingdom of Heaven does not give them status. Unfortunately, here are always religious, being human and fallen, who will want status, to "be looked up to a a right" but this pride is an antithesis of the Gospel teaching of Jesus to be meek and humble of heart and take the lowest place.

This *is* an exaggeration. It also denies that the Church is divinely guided. Have faith in God and His Ways.

Nevertheless, rebellion against a valid-assembled council is rebelling against Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit Himself, according to Catholic beliefs. For if the infallibility of councils is to be rejected or in anyway compromised, the Catholic faith is no more.
