Discovering Athens, Greece (With a Local)

Athens is one of the world's most interesting cities, with its blend of ancient history, modern artistic and political activity and natural areas.

I visited with my girlfriend Despoina, who previously called the city home for many years, on a trip to see her parents. We decided to see as much of the city as we could, from the mountain slopes to the north, to the coastal area in the South.

The ancient monuments of the Acropolis of Athens, including the Parthenon and Erechtheoin were near the top of the list, as well as the nearby Acropolis Museum. We also visited the Panathenaic Stadium, home to the first modern Olympics in 1896.

We also took time to visit artistic areas such as Psyri, Technopolis and Exarcheia, the anarchist district. We also visited the Athens Polytechnic, known for its political role in the 1973 uprising which eventually overthrew the military junta which had ruled for the previous 6 years.

Athens is more than just the city centre and its most famous monuments, so it was great to also see other areas such as Mount Parnitha, a forested mountain to the north of the city. Despoina's cousin and her husband kindly a trip to the Parnitha cable car which runs up to the Mont Parnes casino, with expansive views of Athens.

We also visited the port of Piraeus and the nearby Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre, both on the south coast of the city.

You had the best tour guide!! I really like the song you choose for the Temple of Hephaestus. The ouzo place + fruit/veg market was really nice to see. The wind noise in some spots was a bit much.
