Issue with hornady hand priming tool

My hornady hand priming tool is locking itself into a position too high to pick up the next primer. I have to take the extra step of lifting the handle to allow the spring and rod to drop low enough to continue the process. This video is an outreach to hornadys service department to see if they can correct the issue.

Thanks for your reply. I first thought the tool was designed this way but after watching other videos that does not seem to be the case

Yea it a pos I have heard that all other are about the same. Mine sp bad it gets primer stuck between the plastic tray and where the spring go up into it and jams up where you can press the the handle down at all. Are any of you having this same issue at all

I had an issue with it binding like that on one I bought a few yrs ago, 2012 or 13, ended up tossing it in the garbage. More trouble that its worth to send it back to Hornady seeing as the border is in the way. It was due to the finish in the barrel, or lack thereof. Couldn't get a dremel sanding drum far enough up in the head area to fix it. It's try it before you buy it on those, might get a good one, might not.

I reamed my trays for a custom fit. There is also a set screw in the ram body you can adjust.

Let me say first that I'm very big fan of Hornady products, but my impression of this tool is that someone at Hornady didn't spend enough time in development and engineering of this product. Lately it seems like several manufactures have been playing catch-up with Lee and RCBS in the hand primer market. I think Hornady could have spent a little more time in testing and seeing what the reloading market thought of the first attempt (I hope) at the hand priming tool market.

the casting that goes over the pivot pin is to large or the channel was not cut deep enough to allow for proper clearance .. from the pics it looks like you could sand on the back of the leg to get the needed clearance a little at a time till it functions. i am a toolmaker of 40 yrs

I think it could be because your shell holder has powder (from depriming). I found dirt and powder is the biggest issue of binding or sticking when reloading. So very important to keep reloading gear clean

I’ve gotta say that overall I really like Hornady’s reloading stuff. Their press is great. Their dies seem to be very well made. Most everything seems to be of good quality. But the hand priming tool is a piece of junk. I can’t get mine to work properly either! Eventually I just gave up and resolved to prime all of my cases on the press for now instead.
