This scene was the most subtly frightening out of this episode because the way Fred looks back...the camera angle at a distance overlooking the audience surrounding Serena and Fred...it evokes an eerie tone. These people don't know that their civil liberties and rights are about to come to an end. That life as they know it will cease to exist...that the perpetrators are sitting right there with them.

Amazing. Look how Fred urges her to pursure her writing career. What has he become? Poisoned by power.

I wonder, how many of those people survived the rise of Gilead? Did they even know that the people responsible for the destruction of their entire lives were sitting in that very cinema with them?

You see so much variation in the crowd; people, women especially, free to dress and talk and act how they like. In three weeks, they lose all of that. That wonderful variation and freedom to choose disappears under the bootheel of Gilead.

It's surreal the future Commander Waterford and his wife seem like everyone else around them: watching a movie and eating popcorn. And then they soon help initiate a harsh, brutal regime that I'm sure doesn't have cinemas nor entertainment venues. It's also very chilling seeing a familiar crowd of people in ordinary clothes, laughing and smiling, all the while oblivious about three planned attacks by coup forces.

All it could have took to prevent Gilead from ever happening would just be one person overhearing them, subtly leaving the theater and calling the cops on a pay phone. If Fred and Serena were promptly arrested and he still had those messages on his phone, the government would know about the plan and protect/vacate the sites of the terrorist attacks. I think they would have acted on that tip because it was metioned in the show that FBI was already close to apprehending some Sons of Jacob leaders and investigating others, so the federal government probably knew that SoJ were planning something but acted too late. Perhaps, in an alternate universe of THT, a random high schooler would be just reading up wikipedia articles on the SoJ for a project and academics would be discussing how would have a theoretical SoJ takeover of the US would look like but then we wouldn't have this show.

I think they sort of started out with twisted good intentions but got drunk with power too fast. Especially Fred.
