A quick overview and my thoughts on the single ring set up i've been using on my Specialized Venge. My current set up is 1x single chain ring set up is SRAM Rival 1x shifter, SRAM Force 1x carbon chainset with a 42 tooth chainring, SRAM Rival 1 clutch rear mech and a Shimano XT M8000 11-42 11 speed cassette.

Interesting conversion. I’d leave the front mech bracket alone.

I think for most road situations the 11x42 with a 50 up front would be great. I built a 29+ gravel bike with 11x48 by 36 which gives me all the gearing I need. It's funny to think of a 29+ gravel bike, but I've found it to be amazingly fast. the fatter large tire blocks much of the wind from churning the spokes. I think its kind of an unexplored secret that most have not discovered about gravel bikes. The ride is smoother and the descents are way, way faster than having to deal with those skinny tires.

Do not drill anything!
It could cause a lot of problems.
With 11-40 cassette you can run 50 even 52 on the front, this is to low.

Do the Shimano rim breaks work with the Rival 1x Leavers?

The 48T on the front will make that bike an awesome road weapon. Leave the front mech. alone.
