Making 4-Hydroxybenzoic acid from PABA

Показать описание
I make 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and isomer of salicylic acid, from 4-aminobenzoic acid, better known as PABA. I first convert it to the diazo salt using sodium nitrite and sulfuric acid, then I decompose that with heat and acid to replace the N2+ with OH.

It's been a while since my last video. I took a small break and filmed four videos, but three of them I decided not to use. Thanks for the continued support even when I didn't post. Also, I wish a warm welcome to the over 150 new subscribers since my last video!

I am enjoying your channel. Just discovered it recently. There are a few things here that I should try.
Thanks.

Great video. Still failing Ap chem but at least I can use the sodium from my tears to season my T.V dinners.

Nice Video. I like this synthesis. Please make more organic chemistry and longer videos and synthesis!

Nicely done.

For an idea for what to do with the 4-hydroxybenzoic acid product, maybe you could make a paraben by esterifying it with methanol, ethanol, or 1-propanol. Then you could test its bacteriocidal properties with an agar plate.

WOW GREAT gotta love those azo compounds. You should do the sandmeyer reaction next and make some 4.chlorobenzoic acid from 4.aminobenzoic acid. They are such similar reactions. I gotta put this one in my notes. Think so far i have only made one alcohol. Tert pentanol. I need to get off my lazy ass...lol.

Anyone think I should make a Tom's Lab Instagram or Snapchat?
