Qantas is eyeing up the replacement of its Airbus A330s and, as such, is plotting a new aircraft order for either Airbus or Boeing aircraft; the plan is to have a decision come within the year and could include either the Airbus A330neo or Boeing 787.

The A330-900neo, particularly the 251t version, has the range to fly from Melbourne and Sydney to essentially all of eastern Asia. That way, they can use the A350-1000 and A380-800 for the really long routes.

The way I see it there are 3 choices.

787-10: they already have 787’s in service and the -10 could offer similar seating capacity to the current A330-200’s adding a PE layout. However would require type rating changes.

A330Neo: ordering the -900 to replace -300 makes it most obvious choice, no major additional training except NEO specific features. -800 would also make sense for -200 replacement but would be interesting to see as not as popular. Could have 2 different seating variants to cover both previous versions. However engines would be different.

A350-900: A330 pilots can do a short course to fly the A350 and be certified on both types and seating capacity could be similar to A330-300

Definitely could get the A330neo much sooner then the 787...
A program in desperate need of orders..
Look for Airbus to offer an amazing deal to seal the order !!

As many have already pointed out, A330 neos! Quick deliveries, minimal training

It is possible that Qantas could transition all long haul to Airbus 330NEO and 350s and transfer the B787-9s to JetStar to expand capacity.
Qantas definitely need something to replace the capacity of the retired B747s, and it makes some sense to expand the A350 order to achieve this.

I feel like they should lean towards the 787-8/9/10 for the A330 replacements. Whilst the A330neo is a direct replacement, it is still adding another widebody type which has different components and a different design than the A350 and 787s, which adds operational complexity to maintenance and spare parts. They already operate the 787 meaning they have the capacity and still have options available from the original order. If they do choose to take on the 10, it'd be best that they go for the HGW variant so it can do trans pacific missions

From a passenger perspective, I think the A330neo would be better cause of the 18' wide seats and the 2-4-2 config which full service carriers get forced into on the A330neo cause implementing a 3-3-3 on that aircraft would be a PR disaster

Last 2 months to now I flew A330 300 and found it great

the 330 neo is the best, the 330 series including the neo ones are among the few planes optimised for both long and medium haul routes, ex : starlux

Oh the irony if Qantas were to get 787s to replace the A330s. Back when the 787 was released, Qantas originally ordered 115 aircraft to not only run international long-haul, but take on domestic routes as well. But the order was then slashed under Alan Joyce to the 25 deliveries + options they have today. If they'd gone with something even approaching the old order, Qantas wouldn't have all the capacity issues they have now, and they would have most likely been cheaper as well.

As a Finn I checked yesterday after Finnair gave a 'positive quarter warning' the size of Finnair and was surprised that Finnair and it's subsidiaries' (plus SAS) are the same size Qantas with multiple times the destinations.
I would say that as Qantas seems to be struggling a bit they should consternate on one manifacuturare. Meaning going all-out Airbus. It wouldn't make any sense for a medium/small company to have two varying aircraft suppliers.

I think the A330neo would be the right and ideal choice for Qantas' A330 replacement, not only because it's the de facto replacement for the normal classic A330. But there are 2 things in favor of Qantas. Besides not needig extra training, the A330neo shares a common pilot-type rating with the A350. So a smooth transition is expected, reducing cost and especially pilot downtime, especially in preparation of Project Sunrise.

From a passenger point of view, having flown both the A330 and the 787 this year, it's a no-brainer. The A330 wins hands down for passenger comfort including quietness.

A mix of 800 and 900 neos, or the A350-900, would give massive flexibility for Qantas - all AUS to west NA and Asia. West AUS to pretty much all of Europe. Use domestically to maintain or improve existing a330 serviced capacity east west and golden triangle. 787-9 could be sent to Jetstar and refit with a gazillion seats. The range of the 800neo is compelling for long haul if the price is sharp. But qantas really have the option to build around the existing a330 or incoming a350 for commonality. So it will really come down to what airbus and Boeing want the outcome to be.

I reckon the A330 Neo would be a great replacement, this is because they don't have to retrain both flight crew and cabin crew for a completely new aircraft which will save them a lot of money. As well as that, Airbus have specifically made the A330 Neo have cockpit commonality with the A320's which will also be helpful for the pilots. And if you have a look at Qantas' regional routes, I might be wrong but most of the time it's the A330 if they've got a widebody running on it, not the 787.

A no brainer would be the A330-900neo, to retain aircrew and maintenance commonality, but QANTAS aircraft acquisition logic over the decades leaves a lot to be desired, the omission of any B777 variant comes to mind.

I would see the A330 maybe being replaced by the NEO as the 787 is a much different aircraft with a very different range and flight profile type. I would imagine the 787 and A350 being longhaul and ultra longhaul and the A330NEO being used for domestic capacity / cross country and medium haul international routes. Boeing really did shoot themselves in the foot when they couldn't come up with a 767 / 757 type replacement which is sort of where the A330 is sitting albeit a bit heavier.

I tend to say that the best solution for Qantas would be simplifying the fleet and with that being said the 787 Family would be the best shot ! I see QF doing a top up order compromising all the three variants of the 787 family:
787-8 to replace the A330-200(15)
787-9 for further expansion
787-10 to replace the A330-300(10)
I also see a top up order for the A350 family to replace the A380 in the foreseeable future as it will become the flagship for Qantas and I believe they will go all the way with the A350-1000 as the 787-9 and other members of the family will become the backbone for Qantas operations so I don't see any potencial for the A350-900 but who knows...

Personally speaking I think qantas would be very smart if they replaced the Airbus A330Ceo's with the A330Neo's as that would keep fleet famillarity as a cornerstone of qatas airways business model.

A330 neo is best replacement for A330 ceo

Karthi_kks

ordering the A330 NEO makes sense as a replacement for the A330 CEO, who knows when they could get 787's to replace them plus training A330 pilots to fly 787's will be costly
