They laughed and clapped because they had never felt the horror of that voice.

If you were a Marine in the Pacific during and you woke up one morning and heard this, you knew you were about to have a really bad day.

I got this off the internet but this is why they are doing it.
A. "Banzai(万歳)" literally means ten thousand years (of life). It is written with the combination of the kanji characters for "ten thousand(万)" and "age(歳)." Click here to learn the kanji characters for it.
"Banzai" is a Japanese cheer that can be translates as "Long life!" or "Hurrah!" It is usually repeated three times to express enthusiasm, celebrate a victory, applause and favor on happy occasion while raising both arms. It is commonly done together with the large group of people.
Foreign people seem to confuse "Banzai" with a war cry. It is probably because the Japanese soldiers shouted "Tennouheika Banzai!(天皇陛下万歳!)" when they were dying during World War II. In this context what they meant was "Long live the Emperor" or "Salute the Emperor

Took my grandpa to see this and he reached into his jacket and threw something. Apparently Papa always has a Mk 2 grenade handy after 70 years

When you think about it, the vigor they shout banzai in sends chills down your spine...least it did for me.

Imagine a lot more people shouting this from somewhere out in front of you? You couldn't see them yet, and they sounded pissed off and ready to come at you.

This tactic wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I'll admit being the guy to know it was a bad idea and still do it anyways....takes stones.

It wasn't funny to Allied troops folks.

The US Marines were not laughing when they shouted Banzai at the top of their lungs but instead prayed that they would not become skewer on Japanese bayonets.

Thank you :) It means a lot that you know this sort of history of Japan. I wasn't raised or born there, but I adore my culture very much. I love America, but I hate it when there are people that disrespect my culture. I have to defend it. We all do.

if our politically correct and pussified military was like this during the war against Japan, we would have been annihilated

That yell made enemy armies tremble, it almost meant: We're coming for you and until you kill the last of us you won't be safe.
