I do see the value in purchasing basics, but only as the foundation of your wardrobe as you build your style.

I fully agree with this as someone with a personal styling business. I especially get frustrated when people give fashion advice on YouTube and push the idea of avoiding color and prints in your wardrobe. Some people even go as far as saying it looks "cheap"!!

Like you said, where is the originality?!

I just started the video and I already co-sign. I don't like those videos for the same reason. I don't wear turtle necks. I do wear camis for discretion. By staples tend to have a flair and I try to find things to mix and match and usually can go through seasons with the necessary layering. I do add pieces that I love and donate or give away what I have out grown. I am surely here for this updated realistic view that really gives ownership to the individual. Signed NOT a Stepford Wife

PREACH! Personal style, beauty aesthetics, and lifestyle absolutely defy
these so-called fashion essentials rule. The rule is based on a Eurocentric paradigm.

I literally have ALL of those pieces but its BECAUSE they work with MY personal style as well as MY lifestyle.

The told for once. I am not a white skin tone, but more cream/ivory, so no white button down. I am not a t-shirt person, definitely not a white one. After the "indoors extended lifestyle", my feet refuse to wear high heels. Thanks for being honest, my lady.

My basic is Pima cotton t shirts; joggers in knit, tencel, demin, or linen; pants with spandex or stretch ( clothes that adjust). Clothes must be machine washable and require no to little ironing.

If we’re honest, most women would see an upgrade in their wardrobe by simply getting fitted for their correct bra size and purchasing quality undergarments like flesh tone bras, laser cut underwear so no panties lines show through …

I can’t with plain white blouses and turtlenecks. My neck needs room. I love a relax pant style and a semi tight shirt. Your ending is everything 😂

Today, I came across your video to get some inspiration for building a capsule wardrobe that fits my personal style and practicality. I always thought a capsule wardrobe should be used as a guide. I like the idea of having a jacket but prefer wearing a velvet jacket that's blue or green that takes from fall to spring, also wearing this jacket to work, church, or brunch. I don't need a button-up shirt but a blouse (a print) that I put on over my head that looks sophisticated that I can dress up or down works as well. For me, I like to have a sequin skirt and top in my closet for that cocktail or holiday party, I knit, so I'm knitting a cardi with a belt, it's roomy, comfy and soft, and a nice beige so I can wear with existing pieces I own. It's not a traditional cardi but it's stylish and fits my lifestyle. I like denim but prefer to wear it as wide-leg trousers. I need loungewear/PJs that are great-looking but comfortable. I enjoy wearing a dress (usually a knit) with pants during the winter months.

Oh Danielle, where were you when I started my style journey a few years ago? I have cluttered my closet with these essentials that I do not like to wear because I find them very boring. I do love myself a black dress and a pair of chunky statement earrings. If I could wear that every day for the rest of my life I would be very happy. Along With the occasional burgundy dress. I do not like pumps I only wear boots. The essential videos really do confuse people sometimes because some of the things don’t even fit my body type. For example, I have at least 30 pairs of jeans that I do not wear. I thought I was supposed to have them to look current and modern especially at my age. However, I don’t reach for them - ever. Every time I think I will try to get this essential or buy another one they are never worn. Some of them have tags on them.I don’t love them enough to get them tailored.Thank you for reminding us that style is not a cookie-cutter adventure.

I totally agree. I do wear a black turtleneck but have not bought a pair of jeans and a camisole in a million years.

You are correct, spot on! I too, am busty and don’t wear turtlenecks. However, I do like those videos because I use them as a guide. I don’t gravitate towards the items, I pay attention to the concept and what those items are supposed to accomplish, and then I replace them with what would work for me. Example: I’m a plus size, so I don’t wear white button-down shirts and instead I replace the white button-down shirt with a flare polyester, button-down, black shirt dress, or a black and white houndstooth print button-down silk shirt.
