It was great getting the perspective of a doctor who works in a setting that is not always heard about. I think he has a great description of how genetics can cause medical disorders and how that can be used to apply better treatments for patients. Although patients may be diagnosed with the same disease, they could have an entirely different cause. Ruth, for example, was treated successfully as a result of this technology. I think genetic testing is very important for the identification and treatment of so many diseases. However, not all genes are so easily interpreted. I think professionals such as genetic counselors are very important in helping patients understand how to interpret their results. It reminds me specifically about genetic testing for certain conditions like Huntington’s Disease. Knowing if you have this genetic disorder happens to be in fact detrimental instead of beneficial as there is no known cure or treatment, and having a positive test could result in the refusal of insurance companies to provide coverage for this now-existing condition. Are there other genetic disorders that if screened for, could result in denial of insurance coverage? I would argue that genetic testing, while very exciting, needs to be handled with caution so that we can figure out how to use it to help our patients, improve treatments, and decrease harm.
