A server provides services to other computers on a network. A server can be an expensive Windows 2008 Server, or a simple Windows XP Home computer with a shared printer.
Operating System
Server Operating Systems are more stable and secure then Desktop operating Systems
Server Operating Systems and their Software are generally much more expensive then Desktop counterparts
Server Operating Systems are generally not as easy to administer as Desktop Operating Systems
Hardware
A Server can use ANY hardware to operate, but Server Hardware is made to be more reliable then desktop hardware.
Xeon Processors are standard processors used in servers
Redundant Power Supply allow one power Supply to Fail while the Server is Still Running
RAID -- Allows for a Hard Drive to fail without crashing the Server
ECC RAM is RAM that does a self test. It is more stable then regular RAM, but much more expensive.
Types of Servers
Software features -- multiple features can be on one box
Security and Authentication gives access to network resources
Print Servers share printers on a network
File Servers share files on a network
Web/ FTP Servers provide websites on a network
Mail Servers provide email routing for an organization
Database Servers store data for outside applications
Remote Access Servers allow Internet users to access the internal network. Usually a VPN connection.
Final Thoughts...
Buy what you need... Many people buy a $5000 server when all they need is a Dell bargain bin system.

This content is still so relevant and valuable over ten years after it was created. Straight forward and to the point. Cheers Eli 🤙

The thing I liked about your videos is it's not blah, blah, blah...You teach us from basics as if we don't know anything and clear the basics very well and the true part is really we have lot of doubts on our basics...Which are cleared by your teaching. Thank you very much, Eli The Real Teacher...

8 years on and this video is still the most clear cut video on youtube to help distinguishing if I need a server and to know if I need a server or a SERVER.... it's also somewhat hilarious, thanks Eli

Crystal clear. Thanks to these tutorials I learn SOOO much easier about computers. I like also that the information is told a few times after each other. Gives me some time to make notes in the meanwhile. And somehow I dont forget it after a while. Once I have seen the video, I just know it and remember it. Great, great teacher. Thanks a lot!!

I completed a qualification in ICT professional but straight afterwards I went on doing other stuff. Lately I decided to get back into it as my job requires some expertise in computing. Reading my old lectures was a little bit of a challenge, until I found your course Eli. Truly a great mentor. This is 6 years old and still very relevant. Thank you.

Eli this is one of your early videos. I just want to say thanks for all the info you have provided for so many. Many landed jobs due to your awesome method of teaching. Others attempt to personalize teaching and fail miserably. Thanks, for everything.

I appreciate these lessons, Eli! I received my first job as QA, and I've realized that knowing at least a little about many things is helpful (in addition to your own job description, of course). Knowing my own duties is great, but not entirely sufficient. Having a basic mental map of everything related to a software product makes me tremendously more helpful at work.
