My ex husband played steel guitar for Marty Robbins when they filmed "The Midnight Special". My husband, Paul Dobbs, was scheduled to practice with Marty at the hotel we stayed at. Well I wanted to go see an original store in Hollywood, and got lost on the freeway with my husband's steel guitar in the trunk of the car! When I got there, Paul started yelling at me for not being there with his steel so they could practice. Marty Robbins stepped in and said, "You leave her alone. She's here now, so we can practice". He put a protective arm around me and told me everything was just fine..
When Marty was filming a song around a fake "campfire", he started kicking the rocks around the campfire, and said, "The rocks are on fire! " He was laughing and being a good sport.
Marty Robbins was a wonderful human being, and I had the privilege to meet him, even if it was under "unusual" circumstances! I DID get to watch them rehearse though.. 😁

Have had the pleasure of seeing them perform at the grand ole Opry. They used to always put Marty Robbins on last because he would continue singing after the Opry was over and WSM started covering the after opry party at the Ernest Tubb record shop.
He was an awesome performer but died much too young
Connie Smith is still performing and I just saw her at the Opry on October 30, 2021. Awesome true country performers !!!
