The Rise And Fall Of Sega

In the early '90s, Nintendo dominated the video game industry, holding over 90% of the market. It would be foolish to challenge that dominance, but that’s exactly what Sega did. With an aggressive marketing campaign and a new star in Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega solidified itself as a top contender in the industry and a force to be reckoned with. However, its reign at the top was short-lived, as it eventually caused its own downfall with a series of tragic mistakes. Here’s how Sega rose to the top and then plummeted to the bottom.

I love how the Nintendo rep said “ never will Nintendo have night trap on a Nintendo console “

And now limited run is making low prints of it for the switch lmao

I was always a Sega Fanboy but seeing what they have done to sonic franchise it makes me so sad. My first gaming console was sega genesis, playing countless hours of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, finding all 7 chaos emeralds keeping and thinking "How to make Supersonic" those days were gold.
you guys can also check my YT channel and support me or advice me to make it better

Sega didn't have financial power to create with Sony and Microsoft, so it did the smart thing and got out of the hardware business and into the software business.

The one thing that would have saved Dreamcast was the inclusion of a DVD drive. This was the main selling point for the PS2, and the reason people were willing to wait one more year.

I remember getting the Genesis when it came out. I was about 12 and we were blown away by its 16 bit graphics and the new style controller. Loved it. Also had the game gear. It was color and blew away game boy. Good memories. Shinobi... Awesome game

Nintendo's a fascinating example of a company that's been able to continuously compete in a winner take all market via the strength of their IP. Games like Mario Bros and Zelda have such large pull that they can bring users to their often inferior platforms (though in the current generation the Switch's portability is a powerful differentiator). I think Nintendo is the success story while SEGA is the cautionary tale. Sega's IP just wasn't powerful enough to bring users to the Saturn and Dreamcast. If Sega could've developed a larger variety of successful properties and avoided some of their infamous missteps, we all might be playing a new age version of the Sega Nomad today instead of the Switch! 🎮👾

Sonic the Hedgehog, Panzer Dragoon, Phantasy Star, and Bayonetta are some of my favorite Sega franchises. If you count Atlus too, it’s Megami Tensei/Persona as well. Sega is great at making video games with an arcade experience.

Big credits to Sega for being a brilliant contender to Nintendo in the console market. By the way, did Sega design Virtual Cop 2 and virtual fighter?

2:11 “Second Controller sold separately”

Sega Genesis Mini: *_Are you sure about that_*

1:09 no, it wasn't. The Master System in Europe was actually pretty even with the NES. The NES never had the dominance in Europe it saw in America or Japan.
